  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Right now in my apprenticeship I am at college full time. College hours are 9-4:15 and I am studying a HNC in engineering systems. I will achieve this as well as a SVQ 2 in the first year. In second year I will work towards my HND on day release. During holidays I will work at the yard.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • So far this apprenticeship has helped me develop many of my existing skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem solving. I have also learned many new skills such as welding, pipe fitting and electrical wiring. I have also learned about pneumatics which is another practical skill that I have developed.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have been enjoying the programme a lot since starting at the company. I have made many new friends and doing well in the new fields of learning. I am excited to progress into the company and learn more information as the course goes on. The college covers a lot of beneficial information

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme I feel is very well structured. The class I am participating at college have given me a broad understanding of key engineering skills. These skills will be worked on more in the company which I am looking forward to doing. College is a great building block for my progression

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I believe that I receive a lot of support from my employer and college. If there is any problems I can call or text my line manager and receive help when needed. The same goes for college as I revive a lot of support from the head of the course

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from my training provider when working towards my HNC and SVQ. They are willing to help and support me with any problems and listen to what I have to say and any suggestions I may have. I am constantly asked how the course is going which I feel is very good.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel the qualifications I will achieve will help me fairly well, but we have not yet been working in our end role therefore it’s hard to comment. Despite this the qualifications have help me grow as a person and work far better in new situations. This will help in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My work funded me and my fellow colleagues to go and develop our team work skills with a trip to an outdoor company. At the centre we participated in many outdoor activities, such as, canoeing, hill walking, gorge walking and rock climbing. It was a great experience I enjoyed very much.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is a great place to work with a fair pay and many benefits. It is also a great way to meet people from all over and work along with them. Also there are lots of opportunities working the company to progress and learn new things to further your learning.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Be sure this is something you are interested in and are prepared to work in a fast paced environment. Makes sure you can work well in a team and have great problem solving skills. Research the company when applying and have an open mind to all problems. Make sure to answer any application questions fully.
