  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I run physical measurements and carry out a variety of lab work. I present my results to my team where I am able to ask them for help or advice on anything that I may find. I get to meet lots of new people and am given lots of responsibility

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills and been trained to use a lot of new scientific equipment. I am now able to run and operate the equipment myself and have also been externally trained to handle certain substances. Any new skills are always trained by a specific person who is knowledgeable and can answer any questions you may have

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy being able to learn whilst working full time. I feel I learn more through doing tasks than just doing theory in a class. I like being able to apply my knowledge to help me solve problems that I may have at work and to get examples of where my knowledge applies.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a dedicated apprentice coordinator and lots of mentor/buddy programmes to help new starters. There are also lots of apprentice events such as trips out and lunches to make sure that everyone has a chance to meet the other apprentices and socialise even if they don't get the chance to at work

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has a good range of schemes for training and wellbeing to ensure that I am capable of carrying out my job to a good standard. There is always plenty of people to ask for help with certain issues and everyone is willing to help and assist you where possible

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Every week I am given plenty of time to carry out my study. my line manager regularly checks with me that I am happy with my work and study balance and she ensures that my work details are appropriate when compared with my studying to make sure that I prioritise both

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification allows me to be much more confident in what I am doing when I am at work. I am able to understand more of the theory behind the practical tasks I carry out. I can also give additional knowledge to help with whatever tasks I am doing at work

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Lots of opportunities to join social groups as well as events throughout the year. For example, there is a Christmas party each year for all the employees. There are also other fun events throughout the year such as quiz's and dinners. There are many sports teams such as football and netball

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Very supportive company with good values. They offer lots of good schemes and systems to help all of their employees. There are many good benefits offered and safety and wellbeing of employees is very well respected. They make sure everyone has everything they need to be able to carry out their job well


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Make sure you research the company and prove you are excited about the role. You will get lots of opportunities so be sure to take anything you are offered to allow you to reach your potential. Always be yourself and demonstrate the values that they are looking for when hiring.
