  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have just rotated into management this week. Therefore at the moment I am learning the role and am also starting to take on board some projects as well, which are based around coaching and developing the team to become more confident and motivated in their roles.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills, for example Emotional and Cultural Intelligence as well as time management skills. I think once I have been in the leadership role longer I will develop skills from this aspect too.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Before rotating into management, I was held back on my previous 2 rotations. This left me feeling very de-motivated and de-moralised. During this time period the only aspect of the programme that I actually enjoyed was the university side. However, now that I have rotated into management, I feel I have been given a sense of purpose and I am a lot happier in the workplace.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think it is well-structured in principle, but not in practice. There is poor communication between the university, Barclays Early Careers and the branch network where most apprentices are based. This lack of communication has led to apprentices being held back on rotations, including me, which has in turn affected development. Overall, I think the structure is good from the university side, but from the Barclays side this structure is not set in stone which has a negative impact.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In the past, my Branch Managers have not been very supportive in terms of helping me achieve all aspects of the apprenticeship. However, management has recently changed and I feel as though they are a lot more supportive in making sure that I successfully achieve all elements of the apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Anglia Ruskin is extremely supportive. My Personal tutor, is there to help whether by call or email. Having this support is so beneficial as it keeps me motivated and helps me to stay on track. Also, the leader of the course, is extremely supportive as well and pushes each apprentice to do their best. Also, the feedback from assignments is always really constructive and detailed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • With every assignment, the theories and models used can be linked to all aspects of the work place. Seeing this connection has helped to improve my emotional and cultural intelligence, as I understand the best way teams operate and where improvements can be made.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are plenty of networking opportunities as well as volunteering activities as well.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a large organisation with many different career aspects and opportunities. Also, they have many employee benefits. But the main thing is that there are a wide range of job roles available. This allows a wide variety of people to find a job that suits them within the organisation.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • Be yourself, Barclays love those who bring their personality to work.
