  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • At the beginning of the programme we were advised of a rotation system that was in place to allow us exposure to all the roles within the business. Having completed Essential Banker (Cashier) and Moment Banker (advisor) roles previously as I already worked for the business prior to joining the apprenticeship I am currently in a Branch Manger role. This involves overseeing the daily running of the branch, growing the business, ensuring adherence to compliance & operational risks. Support, coaching and development of staff by way of observations, feedback and 121 support. Where required dealing with HR issues such as capability, disciplinary and grievance issues.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, they ability to rotate in to several roles in quick succession (in comparison to standard progression) has meant I have learnt 3 job roles in under 2years. I have also been able to take academic learning and apply this to the business for both my own development and also to deploy/develop skills of members of my team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I didn't think I would ever have the opportunity to work towards a degree after starting work and a family. Overall I am really enjoying the programme, It is challenging but in a rewarding way. There are times when everything feels a bit too much but I have received great support from both Barclays and Anglia Ruskin and this has enabled me to get back on track.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The Anglia Ruskin side has been excellent. We always have everything we need and any concerns or questions raised receive a prompt response. The Barclays side has not been as good. Especially at the beginning of the programme there were times when information was not given/unclear and responses were slow (if received at all). There have been disparities across the country with apprentices on my cohort alone having varied levels of experience/exposure. With some being held back in roles to suit the business needs (ie: short staffed) I believe this could be due to the level of understanding line managers have about the programme. With this said there has recently been a restructure within the early careers team and this does appear to be improving.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Since joining the programme it has been realised that I have a learning difficulty. I was supported through a private diagnosis and with equipment and additional training following it to support me both in work and with my studies. My line managers and course leader/tutors have all ensured I was fully supported during this time.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have found that in addition to the training delivered my course leader and tutors have always made themselves available to answer any questions, provide alternative examples of just to add clarity whenever I have needed to request it. We are given access to multiple channels to gain additional support whether that be online academic resources or study skills support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am yet to gain the qualification but can already see the benefit it the business. I am able to bring a new perspective and fresh thinking to my workplace. This enhances the current way we do things and it has also shown me the benefits of things such as collaborative working. I have been able to use this to improve current processes and procedures.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Occasionally, social events may be suggested by team members but these tend to be a meal/drinks and rarely include everyone. There are often things advertised as available in 1CP (London) but the scale or variation of these events do not seem to spread across the country. We have no sports teams to my knowledge.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Barclays have been a fantastic employer. I have been afford an opportunity to study for a degree whilst earning a salary which is something I did not think would be an option for me. The level of training, constant innovation and opportunity to progress within the business is fantastic and something I would highly recommend.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • Research the jobs or programmes available, visit a branch and talk to the staff. Be yourself during the application/interview process, banking is such a personal thing and an ability to build rapport and show empathy is just as important as your professional skill set. Don't be afraid to ask questions it helps you and your perspective employer.
