  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Running a branch with a team of people. Developing staff to increase knowledge and deliver outstanding experiences to customers in the channel of their choice. Through 121s and up-skill sessions, moving employees forward to the role they are aspiring too and maximising returns to shareholders through increasing business growth. Engaging with both internal and external stakeholders to increase the branch footprint.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through the programme, I have developed a new understanding of myself and others through reflection and theories around personal motivation, team roles and the needs of people to succeed in their roles. Since starting the programme I have been promoted into a new role due to a re-structure and am at interview stage to further progress into a role that will use the skills I have learnt through the programme for the benefit of the business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The workload is heavy as it is a full time degree in two years as well as maintaining a full time job, along with the requirements of the CMI to obtain further qualifications. I have met some amazing people that I would not have before, who I can now network with across the business for the benefit of the company.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very, very well organised. There have been minimal issues during my time on the programme and when I have had to seek out help for various issues, the course leader Vanessa has been amazing. I could not ask for a better bunch of people to help me get through the course to the best of my ability.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has been supportive in the time I need to complete the course. I ensure I was given the allocated time to study during work hours which has helped immensely. I have not had many interactions with senior leadership around the course which is a shame as it feels like it is just me and the university, not the bank.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The staff at Anglia are amazing. I have not had course to complain in any area of the teaching or the requirements of me. I have not been hassled to complete tasks, but they have touched base with me a pivotal moments to ensure I am happy and on track.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The course covers a lot of elements that help me to understand people and how they think. This has helped me, especially with engaging brain before mouth. This has made me a much more rounded leader, able to handle difficult tasks and difficult people in a much easier way than prior to the course.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I engage in social activities with some people from branch on a fairly regular basis. There are no sports teams etc that I am aware of in the area. Some colleagues are engaged in networking, not at the branch I am currently at due to size and staffing but it is something that I am looking into in the short term to increase the awareness of my branch in the community.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Barclays now invest in their staff. I have been in the bank for 13 years and had nothing invested in my future until this course came around. The money, time and effort that has been put in to developing me and the skills I can utilise both in and out of the bank is commendable.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • Be honest, the interviews are about the individual, not the role. When discussing what can be brought to the role, it is not always about the role, but what the individual can bring the bank which is the right way to carry out interviews. It would be nice when applying higher up the ladder that this attitude could be taken into account as it is a lot more black and white.
