  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I currently manage 3 local branches, which consist of 12 members of staff. I manage the performance with 121's, coaching and observations, and also manage the operational performance of the branch, by filling out the branch controls review log to make sure colleagues are following the correct procedures. I also manage staffing and resource.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have built so many skills this year, such as communication skills. I have had to host conference calls which has built my confidence. I have also had to be influential to my colleagues in order to help them build their performance. I have had to learn how to coach and observe, and how to give feedback

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I feel that the programme has given me so many opportunities, however I feel that the support is not always followed up by this. For example I feel that I could have been supported more in my leadership rotation, as it is very difficult at such a young age, to do this role independently.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is quite well structured, in the fact that you do all the roles in the branch, which really builds your knowledge and experience to set you up for the future. However I feel that some people are given more opportunities dependant on who they know and where they are based, which makes the programme unfair.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • During my first 2 roles on the programme I was heavily support, through my essential and moment banker training. However now going onto my leadership rotation I do not feel as supported. I am now been expected to manage 3 branches on my own, with no previous experience and very little support. I am able to ring colleagues or peers if I am stuck, but it is very difficult without being able to shadow someone else who has that experience.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Receive lots of support from Anglia Ruskin on the university side of things. Tutors on hand for support and proof reading. Sometimes take a while to respond. Given a personal tutor who does regular catch ups to check everything is ok and all work is up to date. No other issues.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • A lot. Leadership degree relates a lot of the work based practices, to the real life occurences. It is only in the leadership rotation that you feel your work life relates to the degree, when in lower role positions it doesn't feel as relevant but is building up for the end year.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, given opportunities to take part in charity events and extra curricular activities outside of work. Not really networking events, but are given the opportunity to attend training courses. Could be improved to let apprentices do more shadowing of other areas in the business, this would help set us up for applying for a job at the end.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Excellent opportunity to study a degree for no cost, and gain priceless work experience. Trusted with real responsibility, and not been treat like an apprentice. Colleagues trust and look up to you, and respect that you are on a fast track programme to leadership. Given the opportunity to influence and inspire.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • Be yourself in the interview, showcase your talent and skills, and don't be so concerned about academic grades. Focus on how you can showcase the Barclays values, don't worry about previous work experience in banking, its just how you can show you have the qualities, whether this be from your personal or previous work life.
