  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am based within the Online Banking department. My role includes day to day management of systems, which I have to manage and maintain. Attending daily calls to discuss updates, challenges that have occurred and how to meet the business requirements. Enrolling new joiners in terms of ensuring they have the required software and hardware when starting at Barclays. Have many other responsibilities and projects which I currently work on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Listening skills I have found to improve massively whilst at Barclays. Due to the wide variation in culture at Barclays, listening to people has helped me improve my communication skills. Working as a team, with the campus being so large it is easy to just become a number or blend in, but working hard and becoming a real team member to ensure you get the best experience is key.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love it. Everyday I am meeting new people, making more contacts, learning something new and of course achieving a degree which is free! The opportunities are endless here and with the support I have, its perfect. However this can really vary with the team and manager you have as I have the right support I feel to have a good balance here.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Every Monday I attend University, which is a good routine I find. However it wasn't always like this as there was some mess around in terms of getting us started. Now we are in the full swing of everything, it all seems to be going good. Like I said in the previous question, the right support makes a big difference.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The perfect amount. I like the opportunity to ask questions without feeling I am annoying the person whom I am asking. Of course when learning something new it is new, so it will be difficult to begin with. So having someone who has the time and resources for you is always helpful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Every Monday we have lectures, they also provide sessions a week prior an exam or etc to provide that extra opportunity to study. Also give us the odd catch up week which is always appreciated. Individual support is difficult to come by but is expected when doing a degree apprenticeship with so many others.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I has taught me skills that I would never thought I would learn, which is always helpful. It does connect in some aspects but certainly helps us understand other peoples roles as we learnt the basics. I would of liked to be taught more theory in terms of Java, as the exercises learnt would never happened in the real world of Java.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Massive amount, its endless. The only reason people would put less than 10 on this is because of them not wanting to get involved or exploring the options available. I currently play football, I organise the social activities in and outside the office with my department. It's fantastic and something that appeals to people our age.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The wage, the opportunity to learn, the facilities available, the people you meet. So many different reasons, but the fact I am going through the Degree route is great. As mentioned above, I am gaining years of experience in the work place, earning money and a qualification. I joined myself through a recommendation of a friend.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • Be honest and ensure you are passionate about Technology/Business. So many people apply for jobs here so ensuring your CV is up to a good standard is important as the competition is not just from Cheshire but Manchester and so on. Be yourself on the open day if you get there, every team is looking for someone different.
