  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working with robots, attending breakdowns of equipment, working with riveting equipment, welding equipment, hemming equipment, fixing anything that breaks to do with the production of the car itself, whether it be a robot crash or changing a proximity sensor on one of the production operators jig. Daily responsibilities vary depending upon which shift you are on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • From training at EEF i have learnt many new skills that I would never have even thought about before undertaking this apprenticeship. I have learnt how to mill using a vertical mill, and how to turn on a lathe, I have learnt how to weld how to make hydraulic and pneumatic circuits, I have learnt how to program several different types of robots and how to program a PLC.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship, making new friends and meeting a whole range of people along the way who have helped further me in my development as a maintenance engineer. I enjoy the job I do and look forward to coming to work every day. I enjoy applying the skills i have learnt at college to my job also.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As we were the first group of apprentices to attend EEF training college there were some bumps and hiccups at the start but they were ironed out fairly quickly and the training we received was very well structured, having a month about on each section on the workshop floor gave us ample time to learn the skills.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Whilst at college we didn't really receive much support from the Jaguar Land Rover apprentice team, but after completing the two years at college and going to plant full time the supervisors and managers accommodated us very well giving us opportunities to undertake jobs that would be suitable for our NVQ.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • EEF provided all the support necessary to see us through our BTEC level 2 and level 3, any subjects or sections on the shop floor we felt that we needed more help with we could ask the managers there and they would accommodate us to get more training on the section we were struggling with.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Our qualification proves our confidence and competence to be able to perform the job role within Jaguar Land Rover, the training received at EEF paved the way to be able to undertake jobs at plant to complete my NVQ to show competence in the work place, to then be offered a job within that role at the end.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are activities to get involved with such as 5-a-side football, our maintenance team regularly organise days out where everyone meets for food and a drink and spend the day with each other socialising. The apprentice team also put on large events for apprentices to attend which helps with networking.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a good company to work for who pay well. The pension set up is good and ensures you have security and funds for when you finally retire. The holidays given are good and the shift patterns are good as well. The look out for your best interest also.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Make sure you receive the best grades in school to ensure that you get a chance of joining the apprenticeship as it is very competitive, this also helps for when you apply for the role you want within Jaguar Land rover as this is based on how well you do in the assessment centre.
