  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The overall role involves diagnosing & repairing laptops throughout the day. On the day, you work from 7am-5pm with 1 hours worth of breaks which can be split up however you want to. It involves a technical background in hardware & software fixes for the laptops. We have a target of amount of repairs we have to complete per day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt diagnosing skills, by knowing off the top of my head a few things that the issue could be and trying the few different things to see if it could be that. The theory based skills that we learn at college aid us in the workplace to put our practical skills to work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme very much. It is very organised from the beginning and we had a time table for our induction few weeks to bed ya into how the business works. We got to experience all the departments and different work areas within the business which helps us understand other departments.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We have two specialists that we can go to if we require any help with anything such as diagnosing or fitting parts. They talk us through it and show us or watch us do the task to make sure we are doing it correct if we ask them to. We receive 20% off the job training per week if we require it which is to complete any college work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We are able to email our college tutor if we have any problems with anything & he will sort it out whenever he can. We can get quizzes reset so that we can revise them to get to know more about the course. This helps with learning as if we do the quiz and fail we can see where we went wrong and do the quiz again to correct ourselves.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps with different areas in the role such as health & safety is one of the units we have done about which helps us to have a knowledge base of what is good and what is bad health and safety practices. We learn about things in the classroom and are able to put it in practise in the workplace.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have a group called Spirit at work and they organise things such as raffles & days/nights out with work. They do things which help get everyone involved, so it won’t just be for one specific age group for example, they will do bits and bobs to suit every single persons likes/needs.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Dixons Carphone to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it is a good job to get into and is well paid for an apprenticeship too. They help you learn new skills and give you time to do your learning based activities at work as well. They help you to meet targets by slowly increasing your target by starting it low then slowly gradually getting higher.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dixons Carphone?
  • Stay focused at work in order to meet the target requirements. The targets slowly increase as time goes on with your experience. Keep working past your targets requirements even if you are on the lower targets as this will help you to meet the higher targets in the future when this is asked of you.
