  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The course was enjoyable, learning new things by doing. While at work, the job again was enjoyable, we had a lot more time to learn units and to reach our targets compared to the other guys, so we had an upper hand. This meant we didn't feel overwhelmed with the target side

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The college side didn't feel very structured, we found out quite late in the year that we had 3 months to complete something we could have been doing from the first day. Also a week before the exam we found out we hadn't been learning everything for it(EAL) Work side had a clear set structure, training in house, then when on the benches, reduced targets increasing every 3 months.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer gave plenty of support (apprentice manager), however sometimes we felt we were treated as the lower part of the teams by the specialist we were working with, being sent to different areas, removed from repairs. Overall though when we requested to work on college work during quiet times this was approved.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Lincoln college gave plenty of support, the tutor was always available to answer emails regarding the off the job training when needed. During the lessons however, sometimes it felt like the session was too busy and the tutor didn't have control over the whole class which meant some people was missed when needing assistance.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification completely outranks the role, hardly any of the techniques taught, such as; multimeter testing, oscilloscope testing is done. These are done by another department. At the start the qualification gave us some great knowledge which we could use to diagnose the units even if it was something as simple as following a circuit.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The workplace has a football team, which takes part in the sunday league. They put on annual days and evenings such as, summer fair with activities, post peak bash, which they hire a venue and provide drinks and entertainment. The apprentice awards evening was just on which all the apprentices had a nice 3 course meal, free drinks, a magician, and a disco.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Dixons Carphone to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company pay a decent wage for apprentices, they give you time and help when needed, and you can go far in the company if that is what you are looking for. Also, if you want to come do you work and go home, its a good place to do that.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dixons Carphone?
  • Have a look at what they are offering, and ask lots of questions. make sure it is what you want. Do you want to go into this line of work, it is very specialist, the skills an be transferable, but they are the biggest local place that does this work so you will struggle to find anywhere better.
