  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • From the 19th to the 21st of February I was at Eversheds on something called the Unlocked programme. This is run by the company to give an insight into their apprenticeship scheme and also teach us invaluable skills which are in their application process as well as many assessment centres.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • I was taught how to conduct video interviews as well as phone interviews. We were given tips on how to stand out without being too self absorbed and dulling the talents of others. We were offered an in depth day of talking to professionals in the field as well as one of the equity partners for the company.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I enjoyed it thoroughly, if anything I wish that it was a lot longer, I found that the people who worked there were very kind and also managed to make you laugh even though many of the areas that they dealt with were quite contentious. I found it to be a very positive experience which has left me with a lot more knowledge.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • I knew where I was to be each day. And was always accompanying someone to a meeting or event which gave me a sense of ease as I had never been in an environment like that before. We were all issued with a timetable which greatly helped and had varied tasks to complete.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • The company had a strong drive for diversity and also was centering themselves on an LGBTQ campaign for awareness. I found them to be very open about their work ethos and also driven to change the current gender gap which is prevalent in law today.i think that it would be brilliant to work in that environment.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • It definitely spearheaded my drive to become a commercial lawyer on a commercial team, it is something I have been interested in for a long time and experiences in other teams on this placement allowed me to see a more specific area of work which also was interesting and something which I would enjoy to experience in the future.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • I was reimbursed for this experience. We were told this before arriving however due to how enjoyable it was I didn't mind not being payed! It was a lovely experience and the food provided there was second to none. The form was given to us with extra copies to make sure that we could gain any money back for travel ect.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • Yes, I met people from the pensions team as well as commercial, each member of staff was all too willing to help you with any questions you may have had or even to show you some of the things that they were working on,I was able to see what working in the office was like.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Eversheds Sutherland to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It was mainly the work ethos, they prided themselves on being a firm who want equality in the workplace and would stop at nothing to get that. I was made to feel at home and felt safe and happy throughout my time there. I would definitely love for a friend to experience that

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Eversheds Sutherland?
  • Do not close your mind to any aspect of law, although it might not be your thing it's brilliant to be able to go to multiple departments and look at areas of law you didn't even know exsisted! I for one found out I had an underlying love for pensions although I would still like to pursue a commercial career, this will help with training contracts as you go to four different seats
