  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have had training in CAD and each day I do a range of CAD-Based tasks such as running tools to analyse different aspects of the car e.g. vision, foot clearance and reach zones. I also get given opportunities to benchmarks cars which involves doing a physical assessment on company cars and comparing them to competitor vehicles.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have done a range of CAD courses which help me to understand and use CAD in my job role. I have also experienced using Virtual Reality within the company and learnt how this can help understand how it feels to be in the car and see out of it.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Each week we work on an array of tasks which all involve learning new skills and putting them to use on real projects within the company. I enjoy doing placements throughout JLR to gain a better understanding of what different departments do and what their roles are in producing the cars we make.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At the start of each year we are shown a loose apprentice plan. If changes are made to the plan we are always informed of them and told why the changes are being made. We are always given support when we need it - whether it be to do with training or our future within the company.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I know everyone within my team and all of my managers and mentors. When we are moving around teams and doing placements I am always introduced to my new team. We all have work-based learning managers who ensure that our learning is on track and that we are making good progress. I have regular meetings and behaviour reviews with my mentors, manager and Work-Based Learning Manager.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • On my apprenticeship I attended college in my first year and now attend college 1 day a week to do work that counts towards qualifications which will count towards our Foundation Degree. We get regular feedback on the training and learning we do in college and at work which is helpful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Not all of the learning we do at college seems significant in my job role but I understand that we have to do it to achieve our Foundation Degree. All of the CAD training I have done at work has been very helpful as it has given me many skills that I can use in my job role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are occasionally social events with work, especially after a success. We apprentices run a football game every week so that we can all get together. There are company events which allow employees to get together and learn more about the company and/or to see a different aspect of it. However, I do think there could be more Extra-curricular activities available - or perhaps more advertising of them.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have gained many skills especially to do with CAD which are transferable to other jobs in many different industries. I would also recommend JLR because the apprenticeship program largely seems well structured and well-run and I am confident that JLR give me the best training they can in order to provide me with the confidence to do my job.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • When applying express how passionate you are about working here. For Assessment days you need to make sure that you have done your research on the company especially since JLR is a British company and has lots of history behind it. It's a really great opportunity especially if you are looking to excel in a career in engineering.
