  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my role involves on a day to day basis, working with the Blyth site team to help and monitor work going on at the site, this includes from a health and safety perspective as well as some work involving the civil engineering aspect of the site, eventually after this apprenticeship I will be qualified as an HVDC engineer.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed many skills, such as my communication skills, this includes through forms such as email and over the phone as well as in person, as well as developing my self confidence and public speaking abilities through the course of the apprenticeship, I have also gained some hand skills and understanding of how to use various tools on site, as well as an understanding of the equipment used on site and how it functions and can be maintained.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme, as it involves a mixture of theoretical and practical courses; which will help to prepare me for my role following the completion of my apprenticeship, My role also involves working in a team which I believe suits my skills and also the way I prefer to work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is quite well structured, with a timetable being released for the course of each working year, helping us to manage training courses and also time spent on site, reminders are sent before each course and there has been little to no rescheduling during the programme, meaning time can be fully devoted to other aspects of the job.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employers, whether it is through reviews with my line manager, with other members of my team, or even with trainers after a training course, being open and talking about any problems at work is pushed at national grid, and there is plenty of support programmes and systems in place to give support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive lots of support from my employers, whether it is through reviews with my line manager, with other members of my team, or even with trainers after a training course, with them offering feed back to myself on my progress and how to achieve my goals with my qualification. Being open and talking about any problems at work is pushed at national grid, and there is plenty of support programmes and systems in place to give support

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe it helps me perform well in my role, it helps me understand the basics of my role, giving me skills and knowledge to build upon with other aspects of my apprenticeship, such as various other training courses, meetings, and interactions with other members of my site team and employees within national grid.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of initiatives and extra curricular activities to get involved with at work, such as sports including football and a gym being available at the training centre, as well as schemes such as cycle to work scheme, there is also various engineering clubs and other activities that are available at work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • lots of employee benefits, good training and schemes to ensure you feel comfortable and competent with your job, as well a support to ensure you are enjoying your apprenticeship and that you are adequately supported and valued. National grid also offers a good rate of pay as well as good pension schemes and activities to do through work.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • be yourself, there are plenty of roles at national grid to suit your skills, and the trainers will help you to work to your strengths as well as in developing yourself throughout the programme. There is plenty of support offered to you, and if you are willing to put the work in, there are plenty of chances to develop and progress further in your career.
