  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Portfolio Planning involves communicating with people within the office and people on site via emails and phone calls. You have to use many different systems when planning to create work plans, maintenance jobs and outages so that the system can keep running. You then need to schedule the work out to the different teams throughout each zone in the country.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am developed many existing skills which including working as a team to complete complicated tasks and objectives, working on my own and managing my time effectively. Managing time is very important as you need to prioritise certain types of work over other if resources or equipment are limited at the time of day you need them.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme very much as it is a varied mix of different types of work. At university, you get taught new topics about the sector you are working within. when in work you learn about your final job role and when in the training centre it gives you hand on experiences.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured as I have been given a detailed plan of where I need to be and when. it is colour coded so I can clearly see when I need to be a university, work or training. if there is a problem I also know who I need to contact to resolve the issue.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • You receive all the support you need, all you need to do is ask for help if needed. You also have 1-2-1 with your manager to discuss various topics with them. Every 3 to 4 months you have a progress review to see how you are working thought out all aspects of the scheme.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • You receive all the support you need, all you need to do is ask for help if needed. You can book meeting with them if you are stuck on any topics or just need to ask questions. They can also be contacted even when not at university via email to answer questions that you have.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps me perform better as it gives me a greater understanding of how the energy sector works and the calculations that are done in order for the machines to work and operate effectively. It also helps me by introducing different methods and techniques that could be used to improve the network.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are many different extra-curricular activities to get involved in at work. For example, there is a gym at work where you can book different classes to go to throughout the day and week. There are also many different clubs you can join such as a theatre club and various different sports teams.

  • 9a. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is an excellent company to work for, it is very interesting as there is so much development in the energy sector and many projects that are being started such as new interconnectors and ways of harnessing renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and sea more effectively and efficiently.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Be prepared for a changing environment as not every day is going to be the same. Everything you do is in real time and could change at a moments notice so having a backup plan is necessary this makes the job a challenge at times but exciting at the same time.
