  • Varied depending on placement. However usually between the National Grid training center, university and base location.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Many skills have been learn during these first few months of the apprenticeship. While in the National Grid in house training center we have covered, project management, presentation skills and formal writing. - To name of the specific courses.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very much enjoy the program. The varied nature of the course means no two days are the same. The fully funded (foundation) degree, company vehicle and involvement in operations of the company make the program very exciting.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course is mostly well structured. The commuting between the in house training, university and base location can be challenging at times. - Courses however are almost always collated together to minimize unnecessary journeys.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • National Grid are very supportive towards apprentices. Whilst the academic work can be demanding, the company will do their very best to ensure you succeed. Other members of staff will always be wiling to help and take time out of their day to support understanding.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider for the academic elements of the course (Aston University) provide as much support as is possible considering the accelerated nature of the course. The content at the university is taught at a fast pace. The university expect the personal learning and development to continue even outside scheduled hours.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The course providers content is specifically tailored to the industrys us as apprentices are involved in. The niche area (of electrical engineering) taught at the university, makes the content very applicable to the job roles.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The nature of moving around the country a lot makes getting involved in extra-curricular activities tricky. However when at the base location other members of staff do regularly get involved in sports groups such a football. There are also numerous team building events and social events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Definitely. Having a degree (foundation) fully paid for and being paid to do a degree is unheard of - living in a hotel whilst studying is also an added bonus!


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Make sure when applying you are passionate about the industry and have a solid grasp of the role of National Grid in this. The application process took about 5 months from initial application to acceptance. The application process is comprised of numerous different stages (about 4). Whilst the process does seem long winded, it is definitely worth the time.
