  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work as a Team Manager for NHS 111 service within the contact centre. My role involves operational management and oversight of the room, ensuring we are meeting our KPIs and hitting our performance. I also manage a team of approx 15 call handlers which includes day to day management such as 1-2-1 meetings, return to works, personal development reviews, disciplinary's etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am learning to understand all of the different ways to manage people through different theories. It has also made me more aware of how I manage individuals and how some people need to be managed differently to others based on how they learn/develop and how they perceive being managed

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying my programme so far. It is quite in depth and there is lots to learn however I feel that in the long run it is really going to help me with my development in my first management position. Completing the apprenticeship alongside my role is great as you can use things you learn from the programme and put them straight into place within your work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well organised. My trainer meets with me on a regular basis and sets me work to do in between our meet ups. The 'Lifetime Fuse' portal that we use is easy to navigate around and is laid out so you know what section/unit you are currently working on and what you have completed so far.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am allocated protected learning time so can study/complete work during my hours. My line manager also regularly checks up on how I am doing and asks if there is any extra support or anything I need. My manager is also aware of who my trainer is and when I am meeting with my trainer also.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider has been very supportive. I have been allocated my own trainer who I can contact when needed for any issues/questions I may have. My trainer meets with me on a 4-6 week basis usually and spends time going over the work I have completed and shows me what I need to do for the next section of work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As this is my first management position, I feel that the qualification is really helping me understand all of the different parts to management in general. Whilst I am only a quarter of the way through my qualification, I know that there is lots more yet that will help me with day to day management jobs I do such as PDRs etc.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have organised several social activities such as we planned and completed the three peaks challenge. We also organised to take part in the tough mudder event which we completed. We regularly have outside of work social events for birthdays, get together and just to socialise altogether. I am also always very keen to get involved in any events that we can attend such as workshops/presentations/forums etc.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The NHS is fantastic to work for as we can all be involved to help make a difference to patients. The NHS in general is such a great service that we are all very lucky to have so being able to be part of that is excellent. There are so many different roles that you can choose from and one day is never the same!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
  • Think about what area within the NHS you would like to get into. Whether its a clinical role or a non-clinical role, there are so many opportunities within the NHS you can go for. All roles within the NHS are all as important as each other. Make yourself stand out from the crowd!
