  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in Monitoring and surveillance of the Investment Bank. On a weekly basis I am assigned alerts for trades/events which are triggered for different types of potential market manipulation. Some alerts may be closed out fairly easily for many reasons, whereas others may require some form of investigation through different news sources.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my communication & teamwork skills by working with a few different teams throughout my short time here so far. I am also now trained in using many different trade surveillance systems, as well as strengthening my excel skills with the use of new formulas. By using excel on a daily basis, it has allowed me to become completely comfortable with shortcuts which speed up processes.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I feel that my apprenticeship has allowed me to learn a lot in a short space of time and there are a range of things to do on a day to day basis which makes it more enjoyable. Also, by having a half study day it helps to break up the week , whilst still being able to learn about my role.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe that the content provided from Fitch is very useful and aligned to my role as well as others. The content helps to give context to the reasoning behind my role and why my team operates in the way that it does. The first exam is a good introduction to banking as a whole, with the second exam being more specific to my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra-curricular activities available, with many social events taking place within my teams, and my function as a whole. There are also many other apprentices on the same course, with many events being arranged between us. There are also many volunteering opportunities available, and every employee is allowed to take 2 days a year to use on volunteering activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend UBS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I enjoy my particular role and I find it is quite interesting. Also, you are able to learn whilst starting your career at a young age. The culture of UBS is very friendly and fairly relaxed in comparison to many other financial institutions and there are also many extra employee benefits available.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UBS?
  • Make sure that you research about the company and especially the role you are applying for. Understand the companies objectives and generally have an interest into the area you are applying for. Having a good initial understanding before actually working for the company well help you to stand out from other applying for the same/similar roles.
