Degree Apprentice - Software Review

I am in a UX designers role, daily i will be on Skype meetings to interview employees about services they use and how to improve them. I do a lot of research into best practices and then re-design systems to incorporate those practices. I also often volunteer for different events around East Anglia.

I have learnt how to use prototyping software and how to prototype quickly based off paper drawings. I've also learned how to speak in presentations and how to present myself in a professional manner. I'm also on a degree course so i am learning that for a Bsc (hons) qualification.

I really enjoy working with my team, its a fairly small team but nevertheless good. My manager isn't always in so i cant always ask him questions on my work but he provides good help when he is in. The company is very large and as such there is a lot of governance which makes work a bit difficult sometimes.

The inductions and everything leading up-to this point are very organised and structured however once you are in the business you can be left with little work to do. Other than that the program is well organised but sometimes you can be left feeling as if you don't know what to do.

My manager is very good, he is an ex-apprentice so he is understanding of the help i need. We have access to a mentor however i rarely use them as my manager almost acts like one himself which is good. There is a good support system and help is never far away

We get half a day study day in the first year, its normal university to be honest. There is support given but you are expected to try your hardest and you are expect to do the work. You have to do some work at home but this is to be expected.

I am a software engineer. At university we have some modules and assignments which require you to code, this is good vocational knowledge that will help me in future roles as we do rotations around the business. I hope that in the future it will provide good opportunity if i choose to leave

There are tons of events to get into, you are encouraged to volunteer as much as possible and you are paid on the days you volunteer. There are sports activities going on in various clubs and there is always something going on which you can attend by asking your manager

BT is a very relaxed place to work. They are very understanding and they are here to support you. I like the relaxed dress code as its nice coming in wearing a hoodie and jeans sometimes. Ive met a lot of great people and its opened doors that were never open before.

In my opinion its luck until you get an interview. My best advice would be to answer the personality questions how you think BT would want you to answer them. Once you have an interview its less about intelligence and more about how sociable you are and how much they would like working with you. At the end of the day, knowledge can be taught but social skills can not.
