  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I serve customers on the counter who pay in, or draw out cash, as well as make transfers and otherwise maintain their accounts. I also help with administrative tasks around the branch, such as balancing the books, or checking credit slips to make sure that they have been processed correctly

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a lot about socialisation, a skill I was lacking in due to my Aspergers Syndrome, I have also developed my mental maths skill through working on the counter. My teamwork and communication skills have also been improved, which were also weak at the start of the program due to my Aspergers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have been enjoying the programme, however for a few months I was without a talent coach, due to vaccines, so I have been slow to progress, recently I have gained a temporary talent coach who is helping me catch up to where I should be, however we are only able to communicate through phone calls

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Due to the reasons stated in question three, I am currently quite behind in my progress. However I do like the way it is presented in Tesselo, as it is quite clear what I need to do next. I recently have been shown the multiple choice quizzes on the LIBF website, which is very useful.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have been allotted at least an hour per week, during which I can work on my apprenticeship work, recently I organised with a colleague to shadow them, and they were informative with their explanation of what they were doing. My manager has been very supportive in helping me when I have been struggling.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification helps with my knowledge of the theory of finance behind my role, and also the reasoning behind many of the procedures I have to follow on a daily basis, I also feel that it is also going to be useful in the future when I am looking to advance

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are very few extra-curricular activities, owing to the small size of the branch I work at, there is however a Christmas dinner, and sometimes a colleague organises a fund raising event, we recently did a treasure hunt in aid of dementia research which involved family members as well as work colleagues

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I joined Barclays through this able to enable program, and am very grateful for the opportunity. They have been very understanding of my Aspergers, and are helping me to develop my social skills, as well as the skills to enable me to do my job well, they have been very supportive of me.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • I think it is important to be honest an upfront about any conditions or difficulties, to help Barclays to provide the necessary support that the applicant needs, they also need to go into the interview with an open mind and be able to be punctual, enthusiastic and keen to learn.
