  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my roles involves helping out the design team with any issues that the team may have. this could include creating different types of drawings such as SLDs, BCDs and wiring diagrams. we would also work on different FOBs and EOs which would effect the work that goes on site. all this helped me gain a greater knowledge of the engineering world

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • while in my first year I leant a lot of new skills on the shop floor. this involved working with different machines such and a turning machine, milling machine, and sheet metal. then I moved to the office and started to use software such as CAD which helped me create different types of drawings.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed my program in terms of getting involved with the work that NNL do, it taught me things that I wasn't aware of before. on the other hand I think my apprentice scheme lacked opportunity in terms of getting different experience across sites and maybe working at different sites a few months at a time. this could have been improved.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • my scheme had a structure that consists of the first year, which was working on the shop floor getting to know all of the equipment used in the engineering world. then the next few years would be working in the office with other engineers and seeing if we can learn and possibly help them out in any way.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • during my apprenticeship, I had support from my line manager who gave me advice and provided help with any of the logs that I had to produce. I have regular meetings with my training provider to try and get everything done that I needed to complete my apprenticeship. HR also sorted a few things that I needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I had regular meetings with my line manager and training provider to go through the work that I needed to do to gain my qualifications. if I had done any work I could get this checked and correct any mistakes that needed to be done. my line manager was there to help me out if I had any questions about the course or anything technical.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think quite a few of the courses that I had to complete as part of my apprenticeship were helpful in many ways. They pushed me to find out different information about the company and about how nuclear engineering works. I found out that safety is very important in this industry.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are a few events such as going to different places to advertise the company and the roles that the company has to offer. I have done a few of these myself and have found them all to be quite rewarding. There have also been sponsored runs and different sporting activities for charities that have been available to do.

  • 9a. Would you recommend National Nuclear Laboratory to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think NNL is a big opportunity to get into the nuclear engineering world. I think that NNL can offer a unique experience that would be difficult to get at other engineering companies. when working with NNL you get the sense of everyone is working together and will help anyone out if they can.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Nuclear Laboratory?
  • never be afraid to speak up if you have an idea. Most of the best ideas come from the people who are shy. so if you feel like you can add something to a solution, speak up! also if you are ever struggling on something do be afraid to ask for help
