  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I move around on 6 month placement to various departments, each one is unique and challenging in its own way. I work with an experienced Project Manager to assist in running their (usually) multi-million pound projects or programmes of work. Jobs have included: planning a project, supplier management, budgets, risk management and much more

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The company really focuses on us developing personally, so we all learn such a wide range of skills and develop existing ones. For example I did Maths and Media at A level and when people ask me to do data analysis I use both of these skills to produce high quality results which are readable / understandable to anyone

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme, couldn’t imagine getting the experience I’ve had anywhere else. The work I do at BAE really matters and protects people who risk their lives for us. He people are often genuine and want to see you achieve the best possible career. Can not recommend highly enough

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Our programme is still fairly new in the part of the business I am in, so we sometimes have issues with people not knowing how a process works or what will happen. The managers have worked hard along with us to improve this and now we don’t often face these issues. Our new intake have had a very smooth experience starting the business

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If you need support in any form it will most likely be there or someone will want to help, only had one issue with getting help for something and that’s because company processes are slow. If there is a genuine personal need for something or you justify it chances are you will get it

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • They change their minds a lot about what they are doing, our lecturer has no formal Project Management qualifications although he does know a lot about he topic. They are often slow to respond to emails but the people do try their best. We have an ucommng project management conference run by our training provider which is specifically designed to help us with our qualifications.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It gives me the knowledge to know what I’m talking about in my day job and understand what others means when they say something. It also gives me opportunities to use my real life scenarios in work for various qualifications. We also run our own projects for our qualifications which also help us to do our job better.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • This depends on how active you are on finding them, we in early careers go to the pub or on nights out a lot. Departments also generally do some fun social things like bowling (and clubbing) but there’s also things like board games club and the newly launched gaming club (wii, XBox etc)

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • A great experience and you are guaranteed to develop, outward bounds (a working week in the Lake District doing fun things) also pushes you physically and mentally which means you learn a lot about yourself. The pay is good although the same pay nation wide means if you live in the south proportionally you have less money than those up north where it is cheaper to live

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Believe in yourself, it’s hard to do when you first start but it is very important to get the most out of it. Although don’t be self entitled as that will get you no where and is surprisingly common in the early careers population, you are lucky but also there is a reason you are their.
