  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The role involves moving around 3-6 month placements that are part of, or are directly tied to the Engineering function. Software analysis, calculations, quality control inspections, mechanical equipment installation, engineering projects, and clearing defects are a number of tasks that I have been involved in since joining the business. On top of this we run projects to promote STEM through community engagement.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a huge amount of new skills from the various placements and roles that I have been involved in. Development of leadership, self-confidence and personal skills occurs throughout the scheme, whilst skills on software and hardware develop through engagement with the product, projects, tasks and the wide range of functions across the business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I find the project very rewarding an the product fascinates me so it is not difficult to find the drive and enjoyment in the scheme. The program offers a good balance of theoretical learning through HNC, with on the job training in placements. The business can take a little while to settle into but once that has been overcome its a joy to come to work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure is very good. The HNC and other college based stuff is very good although the NVQ has been a little difficult to get used to as there is a lack of information about it really. The placements are well structured with clear objectives from the placement, function and the early careers department to work on for development.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer is fantastic in terms of the support that it offers. The new academy for skills and knowledge is just getting going as a learning hub for the entire yard but it already offers huge benefits and support for learning. Early careers, engineering and placements all offer support throughout so no one is ever short of someone to contact.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The provider is very useful for supporting the qualifications that they provide. Tutors are happy to be emailed outside of college and will always offer assistance or advise regarding the qualifications. The work load is not overwhelming and has been well thought out to coincide with what we do in the work place.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The HNC qualification gives the theory and mechanical principles behind the work that we do on site. In placements the same calculations and methods of working are present throughout the yard. The work we do on projects also directly applies to work and helps to prepare us for exit roles after the scheme.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of extra-curricular activities at work and in the surrounding area. The coastline is beautiful and is a stones throw from the lake district. Beach cleans, engineering function presentations, clubs and other things are all available alongside the business activities. Professional networks are promoted through placements, mentors and stretch projects.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because the level of investment from the company is huge and the scheme is well thought through and develops top quality professionals who are capable of working within nearly any industry in the world. The product is fantastically complex and there is always some way to engage, learn and develop.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Make sure that the grammar and spelling is correct in your application to get through the initial process. Present yourself as someone who is keen to devote their working life to ensuring that we deliver on our commitments to the country, and most of all make sure you check out the prospectus and pick the correct scheme for you.
