  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day to Day on site varies quite a lot, as we do 6 month placements we get to experience a wide range of areas of the business which means our day to day doe become to stagnant. HA's are also asked to take part in optional extra work know as STRETCH which are often project management actives for the wider community or local charities.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • yes, new skills are learned constantly, each task I under take has a new aspect or methodology that I haven't used before. this aspect of the job means you are constantly learning and growing professionally. Skills are also gained and developed through a broad range of training opportunities that are offered both on and off site.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • the programme allows a lot of freedom for engineers to develop the areas they feel are the weakest, while also allowing them to take part in real and worth while tasks that directly benefit the design and build of the product. keeping you engrossed and focused on the tasks given.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the programme is constantly being adapted and developed to best suit the changing industry fields. these changes are for the most part smooth and seamless however the occasional hick up does have a knock on effect to the apprentice level, these are swiftly rectified by excellent functional and managerial support teams.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Apprentices have multiple layers of support that can be called upon based on the issue at hand, these range from the business support systems such as occupational health and HR teams to more early careers orientated resources such as placement and discipline managers who can support with college or training related issues to placement managers who can help with more work focused issues. the general populous of the yard are also happy to help with knowledge based issues or queries.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • both the yard and the colleges selected are willing to provided extra time and assistance to struggling apprentices, this can be additional time in the training school as exam prep. Other employees are also usually willing to help with more engineering based issues that come from college or university work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • the qualifications gained varies based on the role of the individual, these are not tailored to a specific job role but instead offer a wider range of skills that allow the individual the option to grow and move within the business. these are often supplemented by additional role focused modules or MSc level of study after the scheme.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are networking and professional development opportunities held in the local area supported by the site and the IMechE which allows for the development of the engineers. there are also out of office meets such as a badminton group and squash groups, teams also often hold social events to gain new members and unwind.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • the site offers a wide range of opportunities and roles for aspiring engineers, the HA's can earn a good wage while attaining there qualifications. Teams are welcoming and often supportive of the apprentices and there development, there are a wide range of on site training opportunities that help to develop different areas of the engineer.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • During the application try to include information that can be related to your desired role, sell yourself to the role you are applying for not just in general. learn some basics about the yard, such as the types of projects under way. Be yourself, the company is looking to invest in people, they want to know what they are investing in and if you lie or cheat your way in it will be quickly picked up on.
