  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role on a day to day basis changes depending on my placement. Currently I am in reactor operations and so I start by going onto the unit and checking that's it is a safe clean condition for work to go ahead for that day. I then spend my time supporting the build teams to help move the program along.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Before starting my current role in BAE I did physics A Level and so I had a brief understanding of nuclear. I have since developed my knowledge much further through my degree course, external reactor course and also from working with experienced individuals on the boat. This as all helped me become more SQEP for my future role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The majority of the time I enjoy my role very much. The people are very helpful and are always keen to get me involved in work and teach me as much as they can. Our scheme involves changing placement, most of which I enjoy however there is some desk based placements which I don't find as interesting.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When we start in the business all of our placements for the next 3 years are all set out for us. We do however have the option to change them as we go along the scheme to suit our development needs as we start to get an idea of our future exit role. I think this is a very good way to ensure we see lots but also are best prepared for our role.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In all aspects of both personal, academic and work I feel I get lots of support from my employer. If I was ever to have an issue I feel that I could get support from several different contacts. We are also given all the tools we need in order to achieve the most we can and any issues we have are quickly seen to.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We are based quite a distance from our college and so communication can sometimes be difficult when we aren't at college. However when we are at college if we ever need anything then there is a huge amount of support available. The college regularly go above and beyond to support our needs.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My academic qualification is a degree in nuclear engineering. My role is working in a nuclear reactor and so I find it helps me a lot in the work place. Understanding the knowledge behind what we are doing helps me to appreciate the control requirements and safety measures in place when at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have stretch activities which involve working with people from other functions on projects outside of work. We also organise social events, football tournaments and other event outside of work. I think these are important in getting to know the wider early careers population and also helping to develop people skills.
