  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I finished my apprenticeship as an aircraft maintenance technician at RAF Coningsby. I have now started a new role in the company at RAF Valley in the air safety team. • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt a whole new range of skills in my apprenticeship. These were taught through the workshop stage and while working on the aircraft in the hangar at the training academy and while on the RAF bases. Basic skills taught were working with different metals and what tools and techniques should be used to manufacture aircraft components.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship. It was hard in the first year as there was a lot of theory which I am not best at and don't particular enjoy. However I knew this was important so we could work on the aircraft safely. The second year was much better as it was all practical.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As we were the first year to take the new course there were times during the 2 years were there could have been better organisation. This was often not down to the fault of the training provider, as they had not ran the course before. as a while there was a general plan of what we were to do when however I think it has now been improved for the next cohorts.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • At the academy there is a very strong support network if you ever need it. There are plenty of people you can approach and talk to if you need more help. Also as a cohort we did help each other through the course and supported each other. The instructors are also very supportive in what you want to achieve.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is the basic of our job role. It teaches all the basic skills and expands on these to help learn more about the aircraft and the skills required to maintain them. This qualification for this reason was very helpful to my role and I am also using what I learnt from it in my new role at RAF Valley. I

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, during our time at the academy we entered a local soap box race. for this we had to design and then build the soapbox. we did this part in work time but mostly outside of work. This improved our team skills and we all enjoyed it. There was a competition between the cohorts.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The apprenticeship teaches a lot of skills and gives you knowledge that you may not get through University or other courses. Also you are getting paid during the course. I made friends that I will definitely keep in contact with. The company also provides you with prospects to move on and do even better things.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Make sure you provide all your current skills, qualifications and experience as these will really help when it comes to recruitment. Keep copies of all projects from school/college as these will also be needed in the interview to show what you have already done and how you can use these skills to be an aircraft engineer
