  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Daily tasks very hugely depending where you placement is. I have placements which last 4 months and am released from work one day a week to study at the local college where Cumbria University come to offer the course. My work is mainly office based task very hugely. My current placement I spend time out on different sites

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills during the first 4 months of my Project Management Apprenticeship, including risk management skills, writing a project management plan, writing a proposal. I have spent time at college learning the importance of stakeholder management and then used this in practice at work. This apprenticeship is brilliant for learning skills at college and then developing them at work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship. I have done many jobs previously including management roles in large businesses so was cautious about entering an apprenticeship, however it was definitely the best decision for me. It give me the opportunity to continue learning whilst working and put the theory into practice in the work place

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The Apprenticeship has gone through changes this year as this is the first year they have offered a full honours degree initially rather than the foundation degree. I have found there are some areas the staff are still unsure how will work but they have been very honest at every step of the way keeping us informed of any changes.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There are many areas I can use for support within work. I have a line manager, a discipline manager, a placement manager all of whom I find very approachable and have been very up front offering any support required. Other people within the team always seem as though they would be willing to offer support should it be required. Everyone is very accommodating to apprentices.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have been pleasantly surprised with support offered by my training provider. During the days at college they are very knowledgeable with advice and then whilst I have been back at work and needed further support with a question I have been able to email my tutors and received a prompt reply. I also have access to Blackboard which is full of useful resources.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification with my training provider has so far proven to be invaluable and obviously relates to my everyday work. There have been some resources given to me at college which I have been able to take back to the office and use to improve the ways of working with the whole team.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activities available to encourage your skills. They call these Stretch activities which are really interesting and are an opportunity to develop your skills in areas which it might be difficult to develop in the office. There are also sporting groups which aren't of interest to me.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BAE is a very fair employer who gives many opportunities for development. As a very large business they have many job opportunities so it is possible to progress your job in many directions. The variation of positions within the company mean there is something suitable for most people. I have already recommended several friends especially onto the apprenticeship scheme.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • I found the process of providing required documentation to BAE difficult. Make sure in advance you have every document required as it is difficult to gather these at a later stage. I would also be aware security clearance for admission can take some time. Make yourself stand out at interview and show your personality.
