Apprentice Substation Craftsperson Review

I am a substation craftsperson apprentice and this involves maintaining a variety of switchgear on a substation such as circuit breakers and transformers, and attending training courses at the national grid training centre

I have gained many new qualifications through the course of this apprenticeship, such as scaffolding and MEWP etc and also developed practical skills such as the use of a variety of tools

I enjoy both sides of the apprenticeship, both training and working out on sites

The apprenticeship programme is very well organized by providing and following a year plan given to you prior to the start of the new academic year.

We are all assigned a mentor that supports you throughout the apprenticeship and also all the staff are very easy to talk to or turn to for support.

Again, all the staff are very easy to talk to, no matter where they are from in the company.

For an apprenticeship, the salary is very good, and also raises each year providing you have met the criteria.

National grid gets involved in a lot of charity and voluntary work such as going to schools to educate them on what we do and also inspire people to work in the world of engineering. Quite often we are informed about this and asked if we would like to help out

To make sure that they keep up to date with their work and deadlines and I would also inform them on how much they will have to work away due to training and collecting jobs needed for the apprenticeship.
