  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my job role is within the Design Model operations department, where i am currently on placements through all of the practical workshops, so my work is very varied. I work a lot on the full size models that the company produces, so work with several new models. there are lots of opportunities for me to develop, and I have an influence on the work that I want to do.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed several skills that I already possessed, such as hand skills and problem solving. I have also gained new skills, such as all of my skills learnt in the trim shop like sewing and wrapping, and I also gained a selection of skills from working in the scanning department.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my time in the work place, and feel that my manager wants to invest in me to develop my skills. I have enjoyed my placements, some more than others, and like the variety that is available to me. I enjoy the fact that I am still in education, but am fully independent as an individual which has matured me as an employee.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?
  • I feel that the company values us as apprentices very highly, which is evident in the way that we are paid and treated. I also feel valued by my manager, who takes personal responsibility to ensure time is invested in me to improve. certain placements have left me feeling less valued, where the philosophy has been more based around just keeping me out of the way for my time there.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • my program within work is satisfactory, as there is usually a placement lined up for me once I finish the previous one. the structure at college is also satisfactory to my need, but the execution is poor. being in a college environment I would expect to be able to access all of the teaching I require, yet many modules in the second year I have had to self teach.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • in the workplace my manager gives me a lot of support, but I feel that my best point of contact is my work based learning manager. I feel that I can approach my WBLM with any of my issues, and he will see if he can help me out in any way.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • my salary meets my cost of living, I can afford to rent a house, run a car and cover all other costs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • i feel that there could definitely be more activities outside of work accessible to me, such as the JLR challenge, which is a great event which only runs once a year and is very over subscribed. also i would like to see more sponsorship's for activities outside of work, where the return would be publicity and a better relationship with employees
