  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to follow placements throughout the business in order to gain an appreciation of different functioning business areas. This includes but is not limited to; Engine assembly, Module assembly, Component Inspection, Calibration of instrumentation, Engine Test and much more. Once areas have been visited, units are completed which associated to those particular areas. It is up to me to follow the plan and organise when work should be completed.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • You learn something new every day, it is a program which is self driven. You are given guidance when needed, but equally your education and experience is in your own hands. It is important to realise that you can make the apprenticeship more or less rewarding based on your input. Engineering skills never stop developing, and this apprenticeship has helped consolidate what I learnt at college into applicable skills, and I feel like I can now begin my career as an Engineer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The satisfaction of completing work and progressing is like no other, as with anything, there can be holdups. When you are faced with a problem that you can influence, and ultimately better yourself from once solved, this is possibly the most rewarding part of the apprenticeship for myself as it gave me a sense of progression and achievement which I would not have experienced had I not been required to solve my own problems. Engineering is problem solving, it takes a problem, an idea for a resolution, a process, some material, a design and some machinery and with the right people behind these ingredients, great things can happen!

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Rolls-Royce?
  • Like with any job, sometimes you may feel as if you're not able to contribute where you may like to, this is normal. However, you are given many opportunities to go above and beyond to achieve a positive outcome for yourself or others and to help contribute to the company.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the Apprenticeship itself can have problems, such as standardisation of work. It is important to listen very carefully when shown how to carry out particular NVQ documentation. If I could give one piece of advice it would be to ensure your work follows examples set by the assessors and not other apprentices.

  • Whenever I need support, I can get it.

  • Ensure you give 100% even when you feel swamped with work! there will never be a day where there's too much to do, it just need attacking from a different angle.
