  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The daily jobs are assigned by your line manager, and these jobs vary from day to day, depending on the work load. For my daily taks, I help out the test team for a project, which includes creating tests, verifying them and running them. This is then fed back to the development team to help them with their job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a range of skills, varying from personal skills to technical skills. For a personal level, I have learnt how to be more confident as a team member and work with a team to complete given tasks, which have been gained through the outward bound course - a training course offered by the company to group people with other apprentices in the company to complete given tasks. From a technical perspective, I have learnt how to write good code and good tests, and the importance of only developing to user requirements.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my job as there is a relaxed environment within the office, and within the team, as we can also discuss personal issues as well as work ones. The job has met my expectations by providing work and training that is in-line with the job I applied for, both of which I enjoy.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I feel valued as an employee, not just an apprentice. Whenever we are assigned to a project, we are provided real work instead of just training or 'odd-jobs', much like a normal employee would recieve. Everybody in the team is willing to help and the projects actually want to hire apprentices, rather than us being put somewhere.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured well, with an induction week to start the scheme off. This consists of presentations and tasks which involve the entire apprenticeship scheme from all locations. All support is provided by HRSS and our safeguarding officer, and is available whenever needed. As for studying, time is provided during the working day if needed.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My tutor provides support with any education-related issue, and replies to emails within a few hours. The support offered by the educational institution is both educational and social. The lecturers themselves have no issues answering any question and will do the best they can to help with any.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager provides support for my role within the team, whereas we have a dedicated safeguarding officer if we need emotional support. HRSS provide training and support if required, and again, they will help with any issue, or point you in the right direction if they cannot provide adequate help. All of these parties are happy to help whenever needed.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is more than enough to cover the costs of living, travel, daily expendatures and social costs. The wage is very competitive from day one, and even provides a nice buffer which can be used to help save money, or buy non-essential items. The location of the office is close to us all, with a few other apprentices living on their own.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are oppertunities outside of work. These mostly consist of sports teams, however there is also sign language training once a week. One of the biggest oppertunities is the football team, who play friendlies once a week at lunchtime. There are oppertnities for the apprentices to help the company at local careers fairs and events whenever possible.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • From day one, you are earning a competitive wage and all university fees are covered by the company. This means that you are gaining money instead of losing it through student loans. Also, all of the skills are incredibly relevent to the field, which will help with progression at a later stage, as most companies ask for a minimum of 5 years in the field before you can apply.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Take your time to answer all of the questions in depth and make sure you highlight all of your individual skills that help seperate you from other potential candidates. In the interviews, answer honestly, and make sure you do your research beforehand to show interest. As well as this, make sure to practice presenting for the interview day
