  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The first 6 months have been spent in the ASK (Academy of skills and knowledge building), this has involved training in Electrical, Fitting and CAD (Computer aided design). Although it has been enjoyable it does get a bit repetitive and can find myself further ahead than others which does slow down progress. Instructors are nice though and offer guidance and help when needed.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learnt a variety of skills so far, and developed some existing skills. Most notably the soldering and CAD element has been enjoyable as I enjoyed these previous to working here. Fitting was enjoyable to learn as a new skill as the fine precision engineering was good to work towards. Also learning the standards that the business require is quite interesting.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme so far has been very enjoyable. I have been given the opportunity to do some enrichment activities such as outward bound which was very good. This was a good ice breaker session for all the apprentices and got everyone to know each other quite well. The course is structured well although as we were on a new standard it did seem a bit disorganised at times.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • Very valued. Its evident from when you first start that they invest quite a lot of money into their apprentices. You get your uniform and also a laptop to work with to do college work and the write ups that are involved in the NVQ that you do. You get a lot of reviews in the first year as well with the feedback being good and allows you to know how you are progressing and how they think you are doing.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Due to this years intake being a new standard it did seem a bit disorganised at the start, the way we had to choose our specialisation was different to what was stated on the application form so the decision did feel a bit rushed. However I do believe that everyone from my year still got the role they wanted. The teaching is well structured by the coaches though and they make sure you get an appreciation from all the sections you are on which will help you further on in the business.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Quite a lot, as this is a branch of BAE systems it would really reflect poorly if we were sent in the business without the required skills needed. We get feedback on all of our work and make sure the tolerances and standards we are working to are that the business are required.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Same as above as my training provider is my employer.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As I had to move up from Leicestershire I do find the wage a bit of a struggle but by no means is it a low wage. It still allows me to run a car and all my necessary bills. The wage does go up periodically but there has not been much information on what it goes up to and when.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many opportunities to network and do extra activities like host events such as schools coming to the building who might be prospective apprentices. There are lots of sports centres nearby and Preston itself is decent to go around. Also as there are a lot of apprentices you make decent mates who you can see outside of work.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Just a really good company to work for, will set you up for the future and the opportunities offered are amazing.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Lots of patience, the application process can be very tedious and long with not much feedback from BAE Systems it self which can be very frustrating. If you get an interview, research the company and be passionate about engineering. When receiving an offer it can be quite daunting when you see that you have to do your security checks but these are pretty simple and shouldn't hinder your job offer at all.
