  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • While on the apprenticeship I am studying for a level four diploma in project management. It has enabled me to gain an understanding on the different aspects of project management and how it can relate to the business area of which I work in. I have also undertaken a variety of internal training that varies from effective writing to developing a resilient mindset. Each training course has enabled me to learn things about myself and ways of working that I did not know before. I have developed team working through going on an outward bound course which incorporated all team members and we had to solve problems.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I extremely enjoy my programme the benefits and oppurtunities you get through working at national grid are amazng. The team does not make you feel left out and they incorporate you straight away on day to day activities. This enables you to fit straight into the business and not feel like an outsider. The company culture is professional but also relaxed at times so you can have a laugh with others. It met my expectation greatly because I thought I would be mixed into the big business and not recognized but instead I am recognized for all the right reasons and made part of the team.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Having the living wage has had a massive impact on me. It has enabled me to move out of home. At 18 moving away is very daunting with having a low income at times however being on the living wage has enabled me to move out and live independently so early. Not only this but I am able to pay my rent/ bills and also have money left to put into a help to buy ISA for when I want to look at buying a house. I can also afford to spend money on luxury items. I would not be able to do this if I was not on the living wage. When applying for the job I noticed that I would have to relocate, for me this was daunting until I noticed the salary that NG were offering even though I was an apprentice. I knew the opportunity’s that came from working at NG where phenomenal and I knew it would be a good company to work for so I did not want to relocation to stop me from doing this. If I was not offered the living wage I would not have been able to work for a fantastic company due to not being able to afford to relocate. Not only this but I can now use this money to get a reliable vehicle for travelling to and from work and also travelling home. The living wage means I have been able to mature and be more independent quicker then what most 18 year olds would.
