  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Role : Digital Apprentice Daily tasks included maintaining and updating social media accounts (across various platforms) and writing up first drafts of projects. Additionally the role required me to do admin work occasionally each week. Internal interactions were between colleagues, gathering information required for the tasks. External interactions were less frequent however this was in the form of contacting other companies to receive quotes. The company is an architecture firm therefore all projects were designs of buildings dotted (mainly) around the south coast of the UK.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I received both a Level 3 Diploma and Certificate in the area of digital media. During the apprenticeship I developed previous skills such as leadership and independent work whilst gaining valuable insight into how a business functions day to day, and he challenges that arise.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I did not find the work particularly enjoyable unfortunately, and due to the age gaps of my colleagues I felt that I did not have much in common with anyone (being the youngest of the business). I did enjoy it in the sense that it taught me quite a lot about businesses in general, and what to expect in the future.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by ECE Architecture?
  • I did not receive much recognition during my year working however I feel this was due to the lack of important tasks given to me. I worked on what those above me did not have time to do, particularly mundane tasks such as sorting the filing system. I did not receive much if any appreciation from my manager unfortunately.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The training was structured well however it was far too easy and did not teach me a thing that I already did not know. I felt that the training itself was a waste, and did not apply whatsoever to my actual role in the business. The support and study system however worked well, in addition to being organised properly.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • As much support as I required was given though this was mainly only at the training sessions themselves. I could send work off to be checked between systems which helped the process. The attitudes of all the trainers was very good and professional - they were even able to intervene in the workplace if necessary to ensure things ran smoothly.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I felt that my line manager expected me to know what to do from the get go which made me feel very inadequate. There was not a lot of guidance or support at times, instead met with borderline frustration. I did not feel that anyone had time for me when it came to helping.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary was just below any tax bracket which I felt for an apprenticeship was fairly good. I did not struggle to get by whilst working there, however lived at home and had most of my living costs paid for. Thankfully I could get to work without needing to spend on travel, which greatly benefited me.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There were various company events, such as going abroad to Berlin, which I felt were brilliant. Each year the business created art installations within the local community of which offered each employee the chance to get involved and help create them. Although I did not participate I feel this was an exciting method to get everyone involved.

  • 9. Would you recommend ECE Architecture to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that if the candidate enjoys the work itself then the business as a whole is a very pleasant place to work. The salary was good enough for an apprenticeship, and far better than some I'd previously seen before joining. It is a very good place to start to understand how businesses function and what is required of you on a day to day basis.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to ECE Architecture?
  • Ensure you know exactly what work you will be doing. Unfortunately my role was more admin work than the exciting roles described on my contract itself. I feel the assessments were very easy if you follow the training scheme properly and keep up to date with your work. During interviews there is no need to be nervous - just arrive wearing smart clothing.
