  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to keep on top of maintenance activities and report any defects found while carrying out those tasks. There is a tremendous amount of responsibility involved with my work and it gives the job a high level of importance.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have studied towards qualifications that will assist me in future life within the engineering field. The apprenticeship has also given me a great understanding of electrical and instrumentation principles and all the theory and practical techniques involved with them.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Some aspects of the programme are great and have a good balance of practical and theory however there are other elements which dont give a clear understanding of how they are important to our role and are also delivered in a powerpoint fashion. The company has a great view on ethics in the workplace and this is drilled into us from the offset which allows a very comfortable working enviroment.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Unfortunately there have been numerous changes to our programme throughout the apprenticeship due to certain things, but we are getting everything we need to get done complete. The main reason for most of the changes have been because of changes to the courses and not a good idea of how long is actual required by each course.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We have a 10 weekly review where we are allowed to discuss any issues we have. There are also people we can call should be have any problems with the course of people within the programme.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Everyone from managers, HR staff and Technicians on site are all very helpful and provide plenty of support when required.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • A very good salary for an apprentice.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • An area of the company seems to be working on providing more out of work activities however they seem to be for people working out of the offices rather than technicians.

  • 9. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it is a great way to learn areas within engineering and have the qualifications to progress in your career while being paid very competitively.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Prepare for the assessment centre with examples of times you have worked in an engineering environment regardless of how trivial it may be. Show enthusiasm for the field and motivation to become a qualified technician.
