During my work experience at Bransby Home of Rest for Horses (now known as Bransby Horses) my daily duties included day to day care of horses in the rehoming centre, lunging young horses and cleaning tack, in amongst other things
Before working for the charity I had no experience working with young or mishandled horses. Given the industry I am going into this experience in invaluable
The work experience i enjoyed very much. I learned an awful lot about the inner workings of equine welfare and rescue charities and widened my knowledge of the area
Due to the nature of the industry there is not generally much appreciation towards those at the bottom of the ladder. However, at the end of the day I'd always get a thank you and a chat before going home
The routine of the rehoming centre was well set out and everything made clear for me. The staff were all helpful and happy to help
Due to my training provider being in a different department she was not always available. If I was ever really stuck she was always at the end of the phone
Again, there wasn't much in the way of hand holding at the charity which really helped grow my independence
The work was voluntary but at the time I wasn't supporting my own living costs so this wasn't an issue
I was told about the many roles available and how each fits into keeping the charity running smoothly and what I'd need to do in order to obtain said roles
Yes
The work was character building and really grew my independence and thinking for myself (as well as upping my physical fitness)
Do it! It's hard work but entirely worth it and you'll learn so much. Don't be put off by the hours and the amount of physical labour needed
