  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a substation apprentice. Thorough the majority of the first year I am situated at National Grid's "Our Academy" where I learn basic skills to do with my on-site job. When I am not at the academy I am on the site where I will work when I qualify from my apprenticeship and learn on job skills with the rest of the team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently doing a Level 3 qualification and have learnt a plethora of skills which otherwise I don't think I would have learnt.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work I do is challenging and enjoyable. Learning new skills is also very enjoyable and I have learnt many skills at Grid since I was employed which I find fulfilling and enjoyable.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Grid?
  • I feel rather valued and I would say that hard work never tends to go unnoticed and lots of appreciation from both my manager and workmates is given when a good job is done.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is pretty well organized, however some things are poorly organized at times such as some of the training courses I have attended.

  • I have a review every ten weeks which provides useful and constructive feedback from both my training provider and employer.

  • I have a review every ten weeks which provides useful and constructive feedback from both my training provider and employer.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is great. All my travel is reimbursed too which helps out a lot.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are a few company events and activities outside work, however I would like to see more opportunities outside of work.

  • 9. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • National Grid is a great company to work for. I have learnt many skills that I don't think I'd have learnt if I didn't work for Grid. The job is enjoyable, the people I work with are all good people, and the pay package is excellent.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Research a lot about the job and about the company before your interview or assessment day.
