  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Engineering higher apprentice Day to day tasks can vary from hands on on-ship work to leading design reviews and project meetings. I personally have lead a few sub projects and been entrusted to complete them. A lot of the job involves networking with other employees and contractors, as well as the Navy, to collectively communicate and complete the job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have completed a wide range of H&S related qualifications as well as magnetic awareness, Engine courses, and a number of internal code of conduct training. My report writing skills have improved drastically, along with emails, business knowledge, and deeped understanding of how the business works internally.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I believe it has been the best option for me and OI enjoy the teams I work with, the work I do, location, and working culture. I very much enjoy the programme I am on.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • Certainly within my current team, I am very much a key part of the team and have been entrusted with personal projects and given full trust to complete to the highest standard.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured as well as any other top class apprenticeship out there. The variety of placements throughout my time here gives a depth of knowledge that can only be gained through experience. Day release to college is standard practise and works well being on a Monday as we have a run of 4 straight days within the office.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I personally have used the training provider previously and therefore have a good relationship with a number of key members of their team. personally I have never found or had an issue in getting support when needed.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Employee support is forever on going. There are a number of helplines, health checks, support groups, and council meetings that are all based on ensuring employee well being and improvement where possible.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I have been able to save up and move out of home since starting the course. I rent with two other colleagues and we all sustain and avid social life partly due to the wage we are paid. I am able to save consistently every month and bonus such as inflation pay rises and end of year bonus's only help.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are numerous STEM, early careers, and other events that take place out of work that we all have opportunities to help with. Interview assessment centres is also an area where we are able to influence and help the decision process. A lot of business units are also very prepared to spend some budget to train and give experience to us in events that may not be covered by the apprenticeship. Additionally, sporting events are socially organised for BAE employees which helps network through the business.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • If engineering was a career path that was chosen I do not believe there are any rival schemes. I have had very good experiences here and have no regrets from joining the scheme.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • I would advise to do as much preparations as possible for assessments and interview days. It is invaluable to know how to tackle the online assessments and therefore read all the advice before starting. In the interviews be confident and try to lead without being over-powering. Be yourself critically and try to relax under pressure.
