  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Substation Craftsperson apprentice, Carrying out refurbishment and maintenance of national grid power transmission equipment. I work as part of the Staythorpe team in the NE2 region and we cover about 8 sites in total. Since passing my trainee competent person I am now able to counter sign and assist in leading jobs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting we have gained our city and guilds qualification along with many other internal and external qualifications, for example I have just passed my IPAF MEWP course.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work is always changing and really gives you a wide range of skills to learn. the team I am with always wants you to gain knowledge and they are keen to help with that.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Grid?
  • I can tell even as an apprentice that I am a respected and valued member of the team. If we do something well or we complete a job early we can be rewarded whether this is by financial such as appreciate points or going out on a company meal as a team like we do each Christmas.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is planned over a year and includes all aspects of our training from when we very first started with the inductions up to know. I was given support by my mentor when I struggled on my math's which was very helpful

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The vast majority of people are always willing to help and want you to do well in your apprenticeship and I feel that I have appreciated the support which has been offered to me

  • The manager is always there to talk to and willing to help with any problems or questions,

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There have been a few but because of the courses we need to attend at Eakring we often can't go on these events such as the annual sailing

  • 9. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a fantastic company with many avenues to better yourself


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • "Wear sunscreen" BL And also do some research before you apply to any programme and make sure its what you want to do.
