  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my current attachment (placement) I am aligned to a 'Product Definition Engineering' Role. This role is based around the creating of 'Master Model' file and a definitions (drawings of components. Daily I interact with senior product definition engineers, designers and occasionally manufacturing engineers. I am responsible for ensure all work I produce is too a high standard and conforms to all nessiary RR operating procedures, best practices and standards.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Before starting my current attachment I completed an 18 week manual drafting and 'PLM' (CAD) training course. This is an internally run course delivered by RR staff. This placement has given me the change to use my newly learnt skills in a real work environment allowing be to further my understanding of the software and the work I am producing.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the work I do, I find it both interesting and challenging. I am always pushed to further my understanding of what I'm doing. I work in a team of 8-10 people, all of which I get on well with and have a good working relationship. To my mind the programme has some what exceeded my expectations, I never though I would be given the responsibility to work on production parts so quickly.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Rolls-Royce?
  • My manager is always sure to congratulate me when I have completed to had signed off a unit off work - this makes me feel appreciated. There is always a time for acknowledgements in out weekly team meetings - where out team leader can call people out for good work they have done.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very structured, from the start it was made clear our plan of what we would be doing by when. We have access to spread sheets where we can out individual plans and any changes to them that might have occurred. With in my placements the task delegation is structured, again we have lists where we can view the jobs we have to complete and tick these off when they are done. I have a regular (12 week) review with my 'ADL' (apprentice development leader) when my personal development is discussed and goals and targets put in place if required.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • From out external training provider we receive as much support as we need (with in reason). If we need extra help or advice with a certain piece of work we can contact subject tutors and arrange a time to meet up to discuses the work. The attitude of tutors towards supporting us is always positive and never an issue, and as already mentioned the accessibility of support is good.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a large amount of support from my employer - this can be in the form of reviews or similar. Career advice is always given out in a clear way to help us learn and develop over time. If we ever have any issues both personal and professional our managers will always make time to talk us though this and give appropriate advice.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary we receive is more than adequate for a young person having to move away from home and rent, run a car and feed them self's with enough left over to support and active social life. The location of our workplace means there is plenty of affordable housing for apprentice to rent.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company gives us lots of opportunities out side of work. We can be involved in careers fairs to promote out apprentichip if we choose to. We are given the change to take part in an 'Educational Outreach' programme where we go into primary schools and in groups deliver a day on STEM activities. There are also social and leisure activites on offer in for the of company sports teams etc.

  • 9. Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Rolls-Royce has been a fantastic experience for me so far giving me lots of new and exciting opportunity's. I enjoy almost all of what I have done and am proud to work for a company with such a prestigious and well known name.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
  • When applying online, take your time, make sure you read all of the instructions. Ensure you get all work/CV proof read by someone before submitting. Don't be afraid to contact the company if there is something you don't understand. With online test, ensure you do all practice tests given first. At interviews/assessment days make sure you dress smartly, arrive in good time and bring everything asked of you. Try not to worry and be your self! Don't worry what everyone else is doing to say they have done.
