I am currently in my first year which means I'm based at Warwickshire College full time. I am assessed on a variety of Engineering competencies and working towards a Foundation Degree. During College holidays I travel to plant where I learn more about my role within Jaguar Land Rover and some of the processes they use.
I have become much more competent in more practical areas of study such as Engine build.
I get along very well with my colleagues and have a good working relationship with members of staff at the college and plant. There is also a good working environment within the company with high expectations.
I have a fantastic manager at my place of work. They are keen to find out how you are getting on and if you are getting all the help you need. Other engineers within the company are also very willing to help. All tasks we have been given help us understand our job role better.
I feel the Jaguar Land Rover and the Warwickshire College could do more to explain the structure of the units we do at college. Especially early on in the year, we weren't given much notice when the first change in timetable occurred. At plant, timetables for our visits are arranged much more efficiently.
The majority of college staff I have spoken to have given me and my colleagues enough guidance and have been willing to do so at all times. The head of HE is always open and honest towards the apprentices which is a huge advantage
I have a Work Based Learning Manager who is there to help with any issues both personal or study related and I can contact him at any time. Twelve weekly behaviour reviews take place with my Work Based Learning Manager to review how I am performing.
I earn enough money to cover all costs comfortably as well as being able to save money every month.
The working hours especially at college are quite long but an earlier finish on a Friday compensates for this, giving me enough free time. There could be more extra-curricular activities held by the Apprentice team however a discount scheme is available through JLR to encourage employees to take part in different activities.

For those who want a career in Engineering, it is an option worth considering. Jaguar Land Rover provide a generous salary, a degree from Warwick University, no student debts and a job as an engineer after the six years.
Behaviours are just as important as academic qualifications for the interview process.
