  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work within a department called Current Manufacturing Engineer which involves problem solving on a day by day basis. This could be problems that arise on the production line or ways to improve processes on the production line.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to approach different problems that arise and how best to adapt my current knowledge to fix the problems. It has also improved my communication skills through the need to talk to different teams of workers to find the root causes or potential improvements.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the work when I am in plant as the varied activities and issues that arise change day by day. However I do find that the college experience is slow and could be improved to be more efficient for the company.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?
  • I feel highly valued by my manager when in plant as I am currently supporting/shadowing current team members until I gain more experience. This is shown by the feedback that I have received by my manager and supervisor in plant. The college aspect however I feel undervalued as I am unable to use my time in my own way to complete tasks.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • During the first few weeks of the programme was very well organised with the skills fair being added to allow me to get a detailed and informed decision on the job role I wanted. When I am in plant it is structured well and allows me to have a clear view of what needs to be done and what is expected of me. The College however does not feel organised as I spend a vast amount of time waiting around for activities or assignments to be given. It does also feel as though the course has been stretched out over two years when it could be done in less time.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I find that the college which is my current training provider to be lacking in the amount of support given. This is shown by the feedback that is given by the college for assignments and reports. The first exam that I did at the college was a maths exam and while I know what score I achieved on the maths exam I have still yet to receive feedback on how to improve my score with the exam being over 3 months ago.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive constant support when i am in plant and feel comfortable asking for advise or feedback on how to improve. My manager also gives feedback on a regular basis to allow me to see areas that I am improving in and areas he would like my to improve. If I would also like to go on a training course that is not on my pathway then he will allow me to do it to improve my knowledge and skills.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary that I receive does more than meet the costs for Travel, Living, Daily, Social and Locational costs. I am also rewarded with a pay rise if I meet the requirements set by the company. This is intensive for me to continually improve my skills.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Due to the hours that I work I have yet to find many activities that I can do during the working week. However I am looking to start airsofting with a few other apprentices on a weekend.

  • 9. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As an alternative to going to University as normal it has allowed me to go without the fear of the debts afterwards. It has also allowed me to get a nice social group of like minded people to do different activities with and communicate within work time as well.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • During the different tests that are within the application process be honest with your answers and if the apprenticeship is right for you then they will be in contact within a short time period.
