Machine Controller Apprenticeship

There are three distinct areas within the MINI Plant, Body In White, Paint and Assembly; our largest technology is Assembly which brings everything together. The Assembly hall is a blend of our critical manufacturing associates supported by high level technology which works together to meet our quality and volume targets. There are around 2 772 000 components that are required to build the target of 1000 iconic MINI’s every day. To ensure production works efficiently we need to train machine controllers to monitor, optimise and carry out production based maintenance in the technology related areas of our production system. Machine controllers have to ensure that technical production facilities are always working to the optimum efficiency.

Training consist of the study of modern state of the art automotive production technology, as well as the latest innovations in manufacturing techniques. Our core engineering training covers electronics, pneumatics, electrical, plc’s, hydraulics, welding, milling, turning, basic hand skills as well as general mechatronics engineering.

This training takes place in our onsite apprentice training facility called the MINIcademy.

You will be supporting the assembly team at Plant Oxford who are responsible for the rapid detection, rectification and prevention of faults and optimisation of equipment, within our manufacturing facilities. Your eventual role will be to take responsibility for a designated area of the production system to monitor, optimise and continually improve the area to ensure it is running at maximum efficiency, your goal is to become a productive members of these elite teams responsible for the future of MINI.

You will need to be enthusiastic and well-disciplined as our apprenticeship is heavily focused on attitude and behaviour. In addition, you need to exhibit initiative, be reliable and conscientious. Excellent communication skills are essential, as is the ability to think logically and to work both independently and as part of a team.

Key Accountabilities


BMW offers an enhanced apprenticeship in comparison to others in industry. The two year programme is designed to enable you to experience different aspects of Engineering and production technology including: hand-skills, machining, fluid power, electronics, welding, robotics, control systems and many more. You will then select to specialise for the remainder of the course in your ‘home’ department.

Our advisors are always available to provide individual support and guidance, enabling you to customise training to suit your skills.

In your first year you will undertake practical training to qualify you with all the necessary elements of core engineering skills (L2 engineering) supported by all elements of a Level 2 apprenticeship programme. Following this you will also be required to complete a competency based qualification based on production and technical systems in the business.

Opportunities may exist to further develop yourself but will depend on YOUR performance and attitude.

Qualifications and Skills:

Qualifications required for Apprenticeship:

A minimum of 5 GCSE’S (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including Maths and English at Grade 5 or above.

A technology related subject or a BTEC level 2 or equivalent in a relevant Engineering or Technology discipline would be advantageous but is not essential.

  • Subject to your performance and gaining experience in the business this role will be seen as a potential platform into moving into our maintenance teams in the future after some additional training and assessment.

Rate of Pay:

A competitive salary enhanced annually depending on individual progress and performance starting at circa £12,500 per annum rising to over £18600 over the two year programme. Upon successful completion of the programme you could go into a manufacturing role earning at least £30000 per annum.
