Electrical Power Delivery Engineering
London Undergrounds Tube Trains and infrastructure is powered by electricity drawn down from the National Grid, at a number of Bulk Supply Points across the Capital. This Power is manipulated and distributed by the London Underground Power Delivery Division, through approximately 300 substations spread across 250 miles of Track.
We also power 270 Stations that handle approximately 5 Million travelling passengers per day and have our own Emergency Power Station at Greenwich! All Power assets are extensive, expensive and highly technical and have to be in top condition in order that the Underground runs smoothly to schedule every day and night. Your role as an Electrical Fitter, will be too maintain and operate these Power equipment’s in our Substations, utilising your training and expertise to provide a professional service to our travelling customers.
The Power Division distributes and manages nearly all electrical power required to run London’s underground. On the scheme you’ll participate in substation plant maintenance spanning many disciplines - up to voltages of 22,000VAC. During your training, you’ll learn the operation of complex components which include, high and low voltage switchgear and cables, 415VAC switchgear, direct current switchgear, battery, protection, compressed air, power quality, power generation and SCADA control systems. Apprentices are also trained and licensed in the operation, switching and safe isolation of these components.
