Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship

The UK Production Network consists of MINI Plant Oxford, MINI Plant Swindon and BMW Plant Hams Hall. Plant Oxford is one of the most modern and technically advanced car plants in the world and is the heart of MINI – while Plant Swindon is where MINI panels are pressed. BMW Plant Hams Hall manufactures small fuel efficient, low emission engines for BMW and MINI vehicles. The Technical Laboratory is a worldwide network, supporting every production site within the BMW Group. The Technical Laboratory team in Oxford provides expertise in all forms of material testing and analysis to ensure the quality of our products continually improves. This includes:
- Testing new parts to ensure they perform correctly under all conditions
- Analysing failed parts to understand root causes and recommend solutions
- Microscopic analysis of materials to understand material properties
- Chemical analysis of materials to confirm their composition
- Analysing paint, sealers, adhesives and waxes to ensure they meet quality requirements
The Technical Laboratory in Oxford is fully equipped with state of the art equipment and provides an opportunity to apply science in a ‘hands on’ way to improve the quality of our products and processes.
You will need to be enthusiastic and well-disciplined as our apprenticeship is heavily focused on attitude and behaviour. In addition, you need to exhibit initiative, be reliable and conscientious. Excellent communication skills are essential, as is the ability to think logically and to work both independently and as part of a team.

- Completion of the Apprentice programme including the opportunity to gain a related degree.
- A fun and engaging way of learning a wide range of scientific skills and techniques.
- Theoretical and practical work to support learning.
- Training and education to degree level.
- During the 4 years, opportunity to spend time in other UK Technical Laboratories in Swindon, Hams Hall and Goodwood.
Qualifications and Skills:
We require a minimum of 5 GCSE’S (or equivalent) - 2 of which should be at grade C or above. You should also have English, Maths and Science at Grade B or Grade 6 (in the new GCSE Grading Structure) or above.
We also expect a minimum of 2 AS-levels (or equivalent) at Grade C or above with at least 1 AS level that is Science based.
Your career with BMW Group will be designed to meet individual aspirations and the business needs of an internationally recognised company. You start on a business awareness programme followed by career objective training in the relevant departments.
A bespoke technical role within the highly skilled and elite laboratory team.
Rate of Pay:
A competitive salary enhanced annually depending on individual progress and performance starting at circa £12,500 per annum rising to over £24,000 over the programme.
Immediate eligibility for company car scheme, plus other benefits.
37 hour working week, start and finish times will vary according to work based placements and college hours.
