Are you interested in STEM, aviation or engineering? Dowty Propellers is a world-leader in propeller manufacturing for aircraft and hovercraft. A Dowty Propellers Advanced Manufacturing apprenticeship will give you a wide-ranging experience from manufacturing composite propellers to repairing propellers that have been fitted to aircraft from all around the world. Our apprentices are also involved in testing, inspecting and perhaps even design and development of new products. Dowty Apprentices of 2022 will also have the unique opportunity of joining the company in our purpose-built ‘Brilliant Factory’. The new facility houses our manufacturing, repair and development businesses for the first time in our history. It is an exciting time for us all!

The Dowty Propellers apprenticeship will pay you a salary while you work towards an engineering qualification and give you a huge array of practical skills. Using cutting edge technology and innovative materials, our apprentices truly are considered our future leaders within our business.

Essential Responsibilities
The Dowty Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship is an exciting three-year programme that provides all the skills an individual would need to kickstart their career in aviation.

The programme breakdown is as follows:

Year 1

  • Two days’ study at a college, working towards an NVQ
  • Real-life engineering projects, designed to fast-track your skills and business knowledge
  • Extra-curricular activities to grow key skills such as teamwork, collaboration and self-confidence

Year 2

  • Two days per week at a college, working towards L3 diploma in Mechanical Engineering
  • Three days per week working in our Brilliant Factory
  • Rotations will take the apprentice on their learning journey through manufacturing, repair and overhaul and test areas of our business

Year 3

  • Full time working within the business
  • Completing the rotation programme to cover all aspects of what we do
  • Complete L3 diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering

Our apprentices are assigned projects by the business to grow their wider skills in project management, resource management and materials handling. The Dowty Training team support and mentor our apprenticeship programme and provide soft-skills training to help our apprentices grow to fulfil their potential.


  • A successful candidate would have GCSE (or equivalent) passes at grade 4 (C), or above, in English Language, Mathematics and either a Science or Technology based subject and one other GCSE; overall four GCSEs at grade 4 and above. Equivalent qualifications or experience may be considered.
  • Experience and/or extra-curricular activities in a technical field would be advantageous

Recruitment Process

1st Stage:
Apply with CV and Supporting Statement

  • Supporting Statement of no more than 500 words
  • Use the Supporting Statement to explain why you want to join Dowty Propellers and what you will bring to the apprentice programme
  • Highlight in your Supporting Statement any relevant skills and experience you have that make you a competitive candidate for the programme

2nd Stage:

Video Interview

  • Record answers to a selection of questions on you and your experiences
  • A chance to add life to your application

3rd Stage:

  • Face-to-Face Assessment Centre, held in February 2022
  • Consists of Interview, group activity, individual exercise and a tour

Offers will be made as soon as possible after the Assessment Centre, to start the apprenticeship at the end of August 2022.

Role Summary
As an Advance Manufacturing Apprentice (AMA) you will be based within our Supply Chain, of over 600 people. Throughout your 3-year apprenticeship, you will study a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship Engineering Technician Technical Support – Electrical.

During your first 2-years, you will be split your time between academic study with Gloucestershire College and on-site placement. You will be allocated to a specific business area for the duration of your placement but will rotate around all the teams within this production area. Placements typically last for 6 months.

In addition to technical development, we are also committed to supporting your broader personal development. Throughout your time on the course, you will be given the opportunity to participate in projects and training outside of your apprenticeships with the aim of enhancing both your interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

You will be supported by your line manager, plus placement managers, mentors, and the wider apprentice network, to ensure you are meeting the requirements of your course and getting the most out of your apprenticeship.

Overview of the scheme

Year 1
In year 1 you will start your study with Gloucestershire College, focusing on your national certificate qualification. You will also start your onsite placement, putting your college skills into practice. You'll begin to work on foundational tasks, establishing working relationships and meeting your team.

Year 2
You will continue to attend college, working on your national certificate; you will also begin to prepare for your NVQ. You will start to become more autonomous in your role and start to be given greater
responsibilities. Support of your personal development will also be ongoing, with focus on soft skills beyond the academic at the forefront.

Year 3
You will be on site full-time from Year 3, and will complete your NVQ qualification and portfolio, which you will create with the support of the business and college. You will also be a more integrated member of the team and will be expected to take on further responsibilities within your department. You will also support and mentor younger apprentices. You will begin to think about your future career with GE and the area you hope to obtain a permanent role in at the end of your apprenticeship.

By the end of your apprenticeship, you will have achieved a Level 3 Apprenticeship and hold a NVQ in Engineering Maintenance (electronic), plus a national certificate in electronics.

Recruitment Process

Stage 2 – Video Interview

If you are successful at stage 1, you will be invited to complete a video interview. Instructions will be sent to you via the email you used to submit your application.

Stage 3 – On site assessment centre

A mandatory on-site assessment centre must be attended to progress your application.

Candidates will be invited to attend one of two dates: Wednesday 16th February 2022 or Wednesday 16th March 2022.
