Apprentice Driver

An exciting apprenticeship opportunity to cover an identified area, principally responsible for operating a LGV mixer/tipper vehicle within that area, but also providing cover for operations & distribution teams in that area, as and when required. The job holder must operate in the safest, most cost-effective manner, ensuring efficiency and legality is paramount whilst maximising service delivery.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Ensure amiable and effective relations with customers and staff whilst maintaining the image of Breedon
  • Ensure legality regarding EEC Drivers hours, Road Traffic Act 1988 regulations, permits and other legislation as indicated by line management
  • Complying with relevant work instructions as indicated by distribution office & line management
  • Ensure Security of vehicles and any other property within job holder’s control
  • Maintain records as required
  • Ensure Safety of people, equipment, plant and vehicles within jobholder’s area of control: You must remain aware at all times of your responsibilities for your own Health and Safety, for the Health and Safety of those directly responsible to you, your work colleagues and any others who may be effected by the operations under your responsibility or control; You must ensure that at all times the correct PPE is worn.   • You must adhere to all Company Policies & Procedures (including but not limited to) those specified in the Driver Handbook, H&S Policy, Management Guide and any telematics systems
  • Apart from the duties summarised in your Role Profile, the company reserve the right to include other reasonable duties which are part of, and incidental to, this type of work

Key Job Elements:

  • Work closely with the area Transport manager to cover an identified area. In that area operating mixers, tippers, plant & equipment as required. Carrying these tasks out efficiently, in accordance with the law and the best interests of the customers and the Company
  • Liaise with the operations team, distribution office & line management and advise of any factors affecting operations, observed or commented upon by customers making any suggestions which may improve efficiency or service
  • Ensure correct use of equipment for the job
  • Ensure any defects are reported following company procedure
  • Ensure the legal requirements are complied with by following the work instructions provided by line management
  • Complete daily documentation ensuring that the necessary information is recorded fully and legibly
  • Prepare Tachograph and produce drivers’ card as required by law and ensure that hours and working arrangements are within EEC legal limits
  • Operate plant & machinery safely and as per training & set guidelines (Apprentices will work towards this)
  • Submit all documents daily to the distribution Office or as indicated by line management
  • Take all necessary precautions for the safety of people, vehicles and plant as per Health and Safety legislation
  • If in doubt on any aspect, ask the Distribution Office or your line manager for guidance
  • Hold and maintain a full drivers CPC qualification. (Apprentices will work towards this)
  • Carry out Driver's maintenance correctly, at the correct intervals, and report all vehicle equipment/body faults immediately by approved system
  • Report any incidents affecting vehicles, equipment, self or third parties to the Distribution Office or operations team immediately if it is safe to do so
  • Admit no liability whatsoever to third parties
  • Complete necessary forms in full
  • Report as soon as possible impending prosecutions of self to the area transport manager & Distribution Office
  • Hold a current valid LGV Class C driving licence. (Apprentices will work towards this)
  • Hold plant & equipment licenses as required (Apprentices will work towards this)
  • To follow and adhere to the rules and regulations of the Road Traffic Act

The apprenticeship programme design will be built around the standard and individual apprentice and employer needs. This will consist of:

  • A fully embedded induction programme delivered by the employer and Seetec Outsource Training and Skills.
  • An initial assessment of your skills, knowledge and behaviours in order to develop and enhance your career and personal progression.
  • In line with the with functional skills requirements set by the standard, (where applicable), we will analyse and continuously develop English and Mathematics.
  • On the job training delivered by the employer
  • Allocation of an apprenticeship delivery coach who will carry out:
    • Regular training
    • Assessment and support visits to ensure you acquire new learning, knowledge skills and behaviours in order to progress and develop.
    • Identify, track and support 20% off the job training activities
    • Quarterly formal progress review meetings; identifying learning achievements and next steps.
  • Individual learning plan - this will be used as part of a professional discussion during your reflective progress review meeting and track the 20% off the job training progress.
  • A journey of learning activities over the length of the apprenticeship programme
  • Access to on-line learning and an e-portfolio where you will be able to gather evidence to demonstrate your performance ensuring your apprenticeship – this evidence can be used to towards your end point assessment
  • End point assessment – this takes place at the end of the apprenticeship to ensure you have developed the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for the job role. This may consist of at least 3-4 of the below activities:
    • Professional discussion
    • Observation
    • Portfolio of evidence, apprentice showcase
    • Research project
    • Multi-choice knowledge test
    • Work based project
    • Presentation
    • Competency based interview

Future prospects

  • This role will give good understanding of the construction industry, within Breedon and its 300+ sites across the UK there are many opportunities that can be taken beyond the end of this apprenticeship in a transport, distribution, concrete or quarrying role.
