Government Economic Service Degree Apprenticeship

The Government Economic Service Degree Apprenticeship Programme (GESDAP) is the UK’s first economics degree apprenticeship programme. GESDAP is our innovative approach to improve the diversity of economists in government. It’s part of our renewed vision for the Government Economic Service (GES), where we want economists from all backgrounds to thrive and succeed. Therefore, we’re aiming to get 75 new apprentices into the GES in September 2020 (London and nationwide).

As an Apprentice Economist, you’ll study for an economics degree over 4 years with the University of Kent with no tuition fees, while working in the GES for four years, earning a minimum salary of £20,000. The apprenticeship aims for a balance of 80% working time and 20% learning time, via both distance and face-to-face teaching.

Apprentices will be working on important projects and making meaningful change to the lives of UK citizens, just like all government economists.

If apprentices successfully achieve a 2:1 upon apprenticeship completion, they will be offered a permanent role within the GES, earning at least £27,000.

In the GES, we take your career and development seriously. You'll benefit from regular performance and development reviews with your line manager, as well as learning support from the University of Kent.

Both the University of Kent and the Civil Service offer wellbeing support, as well as support for those with disabilities. The GES is an inclusive place to work, so don't let anything physical or mental hold you back from applying!

We always encourage those in the GES to feel comfortable to come to work as themselves. We're a social bunch and you'll have the opportunity to be part of a fun community.

Entry requirements include a minimum of 5 GCSES, including a minimum of B (Level 6) at GCSE Maths and C (Level 4) at GCSE English Language. Candidates are also required to have/be expecting a minimum of 96 UCAS points under the 2017 tariff point system (e.g. CCC at A Level or equivalent qualification, not including General Studies). Further information about nationality requirements can be found on the website.
