MINI - Press Toolmaker Level 3 Apprenticeship

BMW Group is a global organisation, designing and manufacturing motor vehicles of the highest quality, including the highly acclaimed MINI produced at Plant Oxford. BMW Group Plant Swindon supplies the majority of the pressed panels that are then joined together to produce the familiar MINI 'shell'. The completed body is then passed to the Paint Shop in the next process step.

BMW Toolmaking Teams are vitally important in supporting all Press Shop and related plant activities. They are responsible for the manufacture and commissioning of new tools and the rapid rectification, modification and routine maintenance of related automation and equipment. Training includes the study of modern technology, state-of-the-art engineering and production techniques so you need to understand the assembly and function of technical equipment. You will be trained in traditional skills to include Milling, Turning, Grinding, Drilling and welding. You will also receive training in CNC (computerised numerical control) and EDM (electrical discharge machining) machines. Ensuring Facility run-time is maximised using TPM and other known tools.

When it comes to selecting the right people to become apprentices, it’s as much about attitude and behaviours as it is about vocational and academic success. That is why in addition to the qualifications we require from you, we’ll also look for you to have a range of skills, attributes and behaviours. These include: teamworking, as well as being able to work without close supervision; good communication skills; and the ability to think logically.

Apprenticeship Programme and Career Development

BMW offers an enhanced L3 apprenticeship in comparison to others in the industry. The four year programme is flexible, enabling you to experience, and contribute to, different aspects of engineering and production technology during the first year, before choosing where to specialise for the remainder of the course. Our mentors are always available to provide individual support and guidance, enabling you to customise training to suit your skills.

The first year of the program is purely in a learning environment where you will be attending college or university on a part time or block release basis. You will undertake practical training and gain Employers Units of Competence supported by a national certificate. You could have the potential to move onto a Higher National Certificate (HNC) depending on how you are progressing in the role.

Personal development within the BMW Group never stops! BMW Group is renowned for developing exceptional levels of staff qualification, beginning with vocational courses and continuing with selective training throughout your career. An apprenticeship with us offers multiple career choices and enables you to make the most of your abilities.
