Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship - Wargrave, Reading
Unlike many apprenticeships ours offers the opportunity to get a dual qualification. Studying Mechanical and Electrical disciplines you will be working on our sites alongside around 2500 of our 5000 employees.
You'll be placed on a four year structured programme with the first year spent studying at college gaining the knowledge and skills to be able to join one of our dedicated operational teams at the heart of the business. Our apprentice scheme has been running for many years, you will have the opportunity to work alongside people that have completed the scheme and are now excelling at their roles within the business, who will be able to offer you support and advice when you need it. What will this role involve?
The next 4 years are going to be really busy learning new skills and gaining experience in technologies and area's you didn't even know existed. This is a blended course where you will study both electrical and mechanical disciplines at college and out on our sites. We'll give you a laptop and mobile phone to enable you to carry out your work.
Year 1 - Five days a week at college, four days spent learning workshop skills such as fitting, mechanical maintenance, machining, electronic control, electrical maintenance an installation, plus one day studying engineering theory for a BTEC qualification.
In Year two, four days a week will be spent in the workplace, your own base, or any one of the numerous sites throughout our region, and one day a week in college completing the BTEC qualification.
During the rest of the time on the programme, as well as practical on the job experience, you will also be working towards achieving the UET Trailblazer standard to become a Utilities Engineering technician (UET). Once you have completed your UET you may be offered additional work related company training and if you're really excelling you may even be offered the opportunity to complete a HNC as part of this apprenticeship.
During your time on the apprenticeship it's essential that you place the customer at the heart of everything you do; in addition to making sure you are safe every day by championing Health & Safety within the work place for both you and your colleagues.
What skills are we looking for?
Apprentices are key to our success and we have very high standards when selecting our apprentices. Therefore you should have a minimum of five GCSE's at grade 4 or above (A-C) and above including English, Science and Maths. Don't worry if you don't have your grades yet, if you are due to sit your exams this year we still want to hear from you as long as your predicted grades meet our requirements.
It's not all about the academic qualifications, you should also have a real passion for mechanical or electrical engineering and finding out how things work. Ideally you'll be able to demonstrate this through your hobbies.
You will be motivated and committed; a dedicated team player with a genuine desire to learn and a "Can Do" attitude. You'll also be customer focused and have the ambition to start a great career. Be self-motived, able to develop yourself and take ownership of your career.
