Vauxhall, Apprentice

Business Operations

Level 3 Apprenticeship

How did you apply for Vauxhall?

I applied through the Apprenticeship website after hearing about it from my Sixth Form.

What was the induction like?

The induction was a good insight into what it would be like working full time in the working world. It got me more prepared for what to expect on my first working day as beforehand I had no idea how such a big company like Vauxhall operated.

What do you do on a daily basis?

My main tasks are to talk with our big suppliers such as Total Gas and Power, Affinity Water and Emo Oil (who supply us with Water, Electricity, Heating etc) to make sure they give us the invoices so we can pay them the correct amount. In addition to this I have to liaise with Barcelona to make sure that invoices I send for processing get uploaded correctly and on time.

What do you enjoy most?

The most enjoyable aspect of my job is the fact I get to speak to so many different people. A lot of my job is problem solving which I really enjoy doing as it is a challenge and no two problems will be the same.

What skills are necessary to perform well?

The main skills I think are necessary are communication and initiative. If you cannot do something or need someone’s help then you need to be able to go and ask for the support. If you do not then you will not develop as quickly. Using your initiative can save a lot of time rather than waiting on other people. If you know that something needs to be done, then getting on and doing it rather than waiting for someone to tell you is a great skill to have.

What advice would you give to someone applying to Vauxhall?

If you are applying for Vauxhall I would say you should come in with an open mind and willing to have a go at anything because something you may not have enjoyed doing at school can be so different here. On top of that I would say do not rule out Vauxhall just because you don’t like cars. There is such a diverse range of job roles in Vauxhall which do not involve the car e.g. Finance that there will be something for you.

How has Vauxhalls’ apprenticeship scheme affected your career prospects?

I think Vauxhalls’ apprenticeship scheme has given me a better direction as to where I want to head in the future. Rotating into a different function every year has given me totally different aspects of the company. Within Vauxhall there are so many opportunities to move around and up the company that I am in no hurry to leave!
